Hardware Reliability Engineer, Infrastructure Reliability & Quality
About the role
AWS Infrastructure Services designs, plans, delivers, and operates the global AWS infrastructure that powers the cloud. As an Infrastructure Reliability Engineer you will proactively drive reliability risk identification, assessment, and mitigation for datacenter infrastructure and security equipment (e.g., air handling units, LV generators, liquid cooling, power generators, chillers). You will perform root‑cause analysis of critical equipment failures, lead continuous‑improvement initiatives to enhance datacenter availability and security, and collaborate with internal teams and external suppliers on product specifications, risk‑identification plans, and execution. The role requires a physics‑of‑failure mindset, strong analytical and empirical methods, and the ability to travel within the US and internationally.
Responsibilities
- Identify, assess, and mitigate reliability risks for datacenter infrastructure and security equipment.
- Conduct root‑cause analysis of critical equipment failures and drive corrective and preventive actions.
- Collaborate with internal partners and external suppliers to define product specifications and risk‑identification plans.
- Apply physics‑of‑failure approaches to develop analytical and empirical reliability models during design, manufacture, and deployment.
- Perform lifecycle environmental and operational stress analysis (thermal, electrical, chemical, mechanical) to uncover overstress and fatigue‑related weaknesses.
- Evaluate electronics manufacturing processes for quality and reliability issues.
- Identify critical components, manage vendor selection, and define qualification requirements.
- Develop system‑level reliability models and perform reliability quantification for datacenter configuration optimization.
- Monitor field performance of products, drive root‑cause investigations of failures, and implement continuous‑improvement actions.
- Lead vendor audits and quarterly reviews to improve datacenter availability.
- Travel within the United States and internationally as required.
Basic Qualifications
- 2+ years of root‑cause analysis, troubleshooting, or problem‑solving experience.
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Reliability Engineering, Physics, Mechanical or Materials Engineering, or a related field.
- 4+ years of reliability engineering experience in a high‑reliability industry.
- 2+ years of experience with accelerated life testing, stress analysis, and finite element analysis.
Preferred Qualifications
- 7+ years of experience in reliability risk identification and assessment from component to system level, using analytical, experimental, and statistical methods.
- Experience with reliability engineering for liquid‑cooling infrastructure.
- Proven ability to apply proactive, cost‑effective reliability approaches throughout product design, manufacture, and deployment.
- Demonstrated success working with external design and manufacturing supply‑chain partners.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Benefits
- Comprehensive health insurance (medical, dental, vision, prescription).
- Basic Life & AD&D insurance with optional supplemental life plans.
- Employee Assistance Program, mental‑health support, and medical advice line.
- Flexible Spending Accounts.
- Adoption and surrogacy reimbursement coverage.
- 401(k) matching.
