ManufacturingFull-time

We are seeking a Hardware Development Engineer I to join our Power Electronics team, contributing to the design and validation of high-power electronics systems.

About the role

In this position, you will design, develop, and validate power electronics boards from concept through production, focusing on high-voltage DC systems that push the boundaries of performance, reliability, and efficiency. You will collaborate across teams to solve complex hardware engineering challenges.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the design, development, and testing of multi-layer power electronics boards for high-voltage DC systems, from initial concept through volume production release.
  • Support schematics development, PCBA layout, prototyping, DFM, board bring-up testing, drawings, bill of materials, and design documentation.
  • Develop test plans to validate designs against DO-160 and DO-274 standards, ensuring electromagnetic compatibility, environmental resilience, and functional safety.
  • Create and maintain high-quality design documentation, including schematics, specifications, analysis reports, and test results.
  • Conduct design reviews with teammates and cross-functional teams.
  • Apply system-level thinking to understand how power electronics subsystems integrate with and influence the broader product architecture.

A day in the life

You will support the design and delivery of power electronics hardware, balancing performance, cost, manufacturability, and schedule. Your test plans will thoroughly validate designs and address system integration challenges. You will think in terms of the system, not just individual components, and proactively improve the overall product architecture while ensuring compliance with safety, regulatory, and reliability standards.

About the team

The New Experimental Technology (NEXT) Electric Propulsion Subsystem (EPS) organization conducts technology research, design, and development of the power system for Prime Air’s drones. The team is responsible for delivering an EPS and hardware components that safely support 15-minute drone delivery and meet FAA and EASA certification requirements. Work spans the full product lifecycle, from early-stage research and concept development through detailed design, prototyping, testing, and certification support. The EPS is critical to Prime Air’s autonomous delivery operations, providing electrical power generation, storage, distribution, and propulsion capabilities for safe and reliable flight.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or equivalent.
  • 1+ years of hands-on experience with multi-layer power electronics PCB layout and design.
  • 1+ years of experience working on high-voltage DC power systems.
  • Demonstrated experience developing power electronics boards from concept through production.
  • Proficiency with power electronics design tools (e.g., Altium, OrCAD, ECAD tools, MATLAB/Simulink for power system modeling).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree or Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering or related field.
  • Experience working on power systems hardware for aerospace programs (aircraft, drones, satellites, etc.).
  • Experience leading vendor engagements and manufacturing partner discussions for power electronics assemblies.
  • Working knowledge of DO-160 and DO-274 design and test standards and IP (Ingress Protection) rating requirements and design-for-environment principles.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to use AI tools to build mechanisms that reduce routine work and scale processes.
  • Demonstrated ability to learn new technical domains quickly and work independently on well-scoped tasks.
