Responsibilities
- Teach gymnastics classes in accordance with the YMCA's Sports and Youth Development Philosophy.
- Incorporate the YMCA's mission of strengthening spirit, mind, and body into all classes and interactions with participants and families.
- Create a safe, positive, and inclusive learning environment where all participants feel welcomed, supported, and encouraged to succeed.
- Supervise up to 8–10 participants while maintaining appropriate safety standards, class structure, and engagement.
- Demonstrate and instruct age-appropriate gymnastics skills including rolls, balances, jumps, flexibility exercises, and beginner tumbling progressions.
- Develop and implement lesson plans that provide skill progression and allow participants to build confidence and advance throughout the session.
- Ensure all equipment is used safely and inspected before and after each class.
- Maintain a fun, energetic, and encouraging atmosphere that promotes participant retention and enjoyment.
- Communicate professionally with parents regarding participant progress, class expectations, and program information.
- Track attendance and maintain all required program documentation, including incident/accident reports and evaluations.
- Aid in participant recruitment and retention efforts by helping create a positive experience for families.
- Provide recommendations for program growth, special events, clinics, showcases, or additional gymnastics offerings.
- Attend all required staff meetings, trainings, and YMCA professional development opportunities.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience teaching gymnastics, tumbling, cheer, dance, or youth movement programs.
- Experience working with children ages 5–16.
- Strong classroom management and communication skills.
- CPR/First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain).
- Passion for youth development and helping children build confidence through physical activity.
Requirements
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Knowledgeable with USAG skill progressions.
- Previous gymnastics coaching experience preferred.
- Ability to work with children and participants of varying ages and skill levels.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Mature, enthusiastic, dependable, and caring personality.
- Ability to develop and implement age-appropriate lesson plans and skill progressions.
- Ability to create a safe, positive, and inclusive learning environment.
- Strong classroom management and organizational skills.
- Ability to communicate effectively with parents and YMCA staff.
- Commitment to participant safety and risk management practices.
- Current CPR/AED certification within 60 days of employment.
