About the role
The Group Life Counselor (GLC) at Josephine County Juvenile Justice Department oversees daily living activities and provides therapeutic support to youth in residential and detention programs. The role adheres to Trauma Informed Care principles and collaborates with various state and local agencies.
Responsibilities
- Supervise and interact with youth in a therapeutic environment to maintain safety and provide necessary services.
- Establish rapport with youth through clear, consistent, and appropriate boundaries.
- Safely de-escalate youth in crisis situations using verbal intervention skills.
- Participate in physical interventions and use restraints to maintain safety and security.
- Maintain a positive attitude and professional demeanor, respecting all parties involved.
- Perform housekeeping tasks and maintain a clean and safe environment.
- Collaborate with other GLC staff to ensure shift activities and milieu structure are maintained.
- Deliver and document individual skill-building services weekly.
- Maintain regular contact with Social Services Facilitators and facilitate group skill-building opportunities.
- Facilitate medication administration and transport youth to and from appointments and court.
- Document activities and interventions accurately and promptly.
- Supervise detention youth during meals, recreation, and other activities.
- Facilitate Cognitive Groups under the direction of the Treatment and Transition Program Coordinator.
Requirements
- Associate degree (A.A.) or equivalent from two-year college or technical school.
- Successfully complete OJDDA Detention and Custody Workers training within six months.
- Successfully complete Residential Program orientation and training.
- Successfully complete CPI Full Course with verbal de-escalation skills and physical skills.
- Successfully complete Detention Defensive Tactics Course.
- Successfully complete Suicide Awareness and Intervention Training.
- First Aid/CPR Certification.
- Food Handlers License.
- Valid Oregon Driver’s License, comprehensive automobile insurance, and a safe driving record.
- Pass and maintain CJIS security clearance.
Qualifications
- Ability to perform essential duties satisfactorily.
- Knowledge of Oregon Revised Statutes and standards of care.
- Alignment with the Reasonable and Prudent Parent Standard (RPPS) and Collaborative Problem Solving (CPS).
- Proficiency in the Juvenile Justice Information System (JJIS).
