About the role

As part of our Youth Services Department’s vision, all Youth Services Staff will assist in promoting growth, leadership, and positive self-image in all young people at our Grand Street Settlement sites. Group Leaders will promote and develop a safe and engaging learning environment for youth through recreational activities, team-building games, theme-based lessons, and trips.

Responsibilities

  • Complete after-school trainings as per school-age child-care requirements.
  • Supervise participants: problem-solve and intervene directly with youth in groups; maintain adequate staff-to-camper ratios during all activities and trips.
  • Design and implement project-based school-year curriculum; facilitate group management and activities based on after-school themes.
  • Work collaboratively with co-workers; know and follow daily in-house and trip schedules and procedures.
  • Create a camp culture of positive group cohesiveness.
  • Ensure safety: supervise a group of children, participate in activities and trips, and provide a safe working environment.
  • Maintain adequate supplies in first-aid and safety kits; keep medical and contact information for each camper.
  • Maintain a daily log of all incidents/injuries; prepare attendance reports and other required reports.
  • Know and adhere to all regulations and procedures outlined in the safety plan.
  • Communicate regularly and appropriately with parents; complete all necessary paperwork.
  • Supervise and evaluate youth staff; perform other assignments as required.

Requirements

  • High school diploma (college degree preferred).
  • Fluency in Spanish highly encouraged.
  • Youth development experience required; three or more years’ experience and expertise working with youth (volunteer experience acceptable).
  • Three or more years’ experience coaching, instructing, or facilitating curriculum-based lessons (youth preferred).
  • Experience teaching and designing curricula; previous experience working with diverse young people.
  • High level of proficiency in administrative work; capacity to thrive under pressure while working on multiple tasks and projects.
  • Personable, energetic, and enthusiastic demeanor.
  • Must successfully complete: NYSDOH Fingerprinting Screening; New York State Clearance Review Background Check; three reference checks; physical with updated TB test (fees may apply). If offered the position, must submit a $25 fee for NY State Clearance Review.
  • Valid CPR/AED Pro certification through a recognized accrediting body preferred; valid First Aid/RTE certification preferred.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively with all students while remaining professional, motivate students, and set an example in responsibility, timeliness, organization, attendance, and professionalism.

Pay

$20 per hour based on experience and credentials.

Schedule

Monday – Friday, 2 pm – 6 pm. Position is performance-based and contingent on funding availability. School-year term: September 2026 – June 2027.
