About the Role
The Group Fitness Instructor develops and implements group fitness classes under the supervision of the Fitness Coordinator. The role requires independent judgment, initiative, and the ability to maintain effective working relationships with staff, community organizations, and the public. Duties are performed in a recreational and fitness environment, including a swimming pool setting.
Responsibilities
- Plans and leads group fitness classes as scheduled.
- Maintains a safe environment for instruction, including demonstrating proper exercise techniques and inspecting equipment for damage.
- Secures substitutes for scheduled classes when unable to cover.
- Maintains accurate records of equipment issues and updates logs as necessary.
- Promotes and implements special events for customers and community members.
- Documents class attendance numbers accurately.
- Provides training and demonstrations to new employees in similar roles.
- Fosters relationships with customers, coworkers, and others.
- Attends meetings, conferences, workshops, and training sessions to stay current on industry practices and certifications.
- Communicates work progress, challenges, and suggestions to supervisors.
- Responds to citizens' questions and comments courteously and promptly.
- Coordinates with others to maximize interdepartmental efficiency.
- Performs additional duties as assigned.
Requirements
- High School Graduate or General Education Degree (GED).
- 1+ years of experience in Group Fitness instruction or willingness to undergo training.
- Nationally recognized Group Fitness or Aquatic Fitness Certification.
- Specialty certifications for Zumba, Yoga, Cycle, Pilates, or others as required by national organizations.
- CPR/AED certification with an in-person hands-on skills assessment.
- Ability to operate a personal computer using standard or customized software.
- Willingness to learn new skills and adapt to changing technology.
Skills & Abilities
- Knowledge of safety principles, practices, and equipment related to assigned fitness classes.
- Understanding of human anatomy and physiological function as it relates to specific classes.
- Ability to plan and instruct safe, motivating, and effective group fitness classes.
- Strong organizational skills and ability to follow oral and written directions.
- Physical ability to instruct 1 to 1.5-hour-long fitness classes.
- Ability to use initiative and independent judgment within established guidelines.
- General ability to understand and apply music phrasing.
- Professionalism, integrity, and empathy in performing assigned tasks.
Pay
Hourly range: $21.71–$24.18 for time spent leading group fitness classes. A different hourly rate applies for additional responsibilities such as meetings, training, or mentoring.
