About the role
The Group Exercise Class Instructor is responsible for teaching classes in accordance with YMCA standards under the direction of the Membership/Wellness Director.
Responsibilities
- Design and prepare class routines that meet all necessary components and safety guidelines in accordance with current accepted practices of exercise physiology.
- Attend staff meetings.
- Complete all required education and training. All certifications must be kept current, copies provided to the Membership/Wellness Director, and uploaded to appropriate program data systems.
- Record class attendance in Group Ex Pro immediately following class.
- Follow procedure for securing a substitute by using Group Ex Pro and as necessary making contacts until substitute is secured. Report to the Membership/Wellness Director if no substitute is available.
- Start and end classes on time and ensure a safe and seamless transition.
- Maintain equipment and keep group exercise area neat and clean. Ensure safety and report equipment in need of repair.
- Enforce all group exercise class guidelines and policies reporting any non-compliance to the Membership/Wellness Director.
- Participate in Branch Annual Giving Campaign.
- Participate in and support special events, programs, and member promotions.
- Communicate to members and prospective members any information regarding special programs, events, and promotions.
- Understand and communicate branch emergency procedures to members as necessary.
- Support the mission, vision and direction of the YMCA of Catawba Valley.
- Member engagement that provides a high level of encouragement and support.
- Any other duties assigned by the Membership/Wellness Director or Director on Duty.
- Using safe and proper intensity progression and regression for class level. Monitoring participants and educating as well as instructing.
- Communicating the YMCA’s values and mission.
- Adhering to YMCA policy and procedure to include but not limited to “Dress Code”, “Computer Usage”, and “Code of Conduct”.
- All YMCA staff are responsible for creating a safe, inclusive environment. This includes following all YMCA policies and procedures related to abuse prevention, reporting concerns or incidents immediately, and maintaining appropriate boundaries with youth and members.
- Personal commitment to YMCA cause and mission.
Requirements
- YMCA Instructor certification, or other nationally, recognized aerobic/fitness organization.
- Current certification in CPR, First Aid, AED, and Oxygen.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills and ability to relate and engage positively with staff and members.
- Proven team player.
