Group Exercise Instructor - Jefferson County YMCA

Responsibilities

• Demonstrates a commitment to continuing education by taking courses to expand knowledge base and practical skill.
• Attends all required meetings as directed by supervisor.
• Screens students for risk factors, health problems, or medical limitations that could prevent participation.
• Provides pre-class instructions, explains aerobics goals, and teaches how to take a pulse and determine target heart rate range.
• Demonstrates safe and effective exercise techniques.
• Modifies exercises for individuals with low-back discomfort, musculoskeletal problems, pregnancy, de-conditioning, or overweight conditions.
• Assesses fitness levels and directs students to appropriate classes (beginner through advanced).
• Monitors environmental factors such as appropriate footwear, permeable clothing, ventilation, and temperature.
• Ensures safe flooring for impact aerobics and plays music at a motivating but not overpowering level.
• Maintains visual contact, monitors fatigue levels, and watches for signs of overexertion.
• Guides students through transitions with clear cues and encourages progression when appropriate.
• Sets up and securely stores equipment after class and maintains cleanliness of the wellness area.
• Secures substitute instructors if unable to attend scheduled class times.
• Performs all other duties as assigned.
