About the role

The Group Exercise Instructor reports to the Health and Wellness Director and collaborates with other Wellness staff to lead group exercise classes in a safe, enjoyable, and positive environment that welcomes all skill and fitness levels. The role focuses on building community within classes and modifying sessions to meet varied health, ability, and cultural needs.

Responsibilities

  • Leads energizing, fun, safe, and educational group classes, as directed by the supervisor, to provide high-quality experiences for members and guests.
  • Engages with program participants and members to support their health and well-being goals through questions and answers.
  • Maintains working knowledge of wellness trends via YUSA courses and external training to provide effective information and support.
  • Builds authentic relationships with members and helps participants connect with each other and the YMCA.
  • Observes and adjusts class approach to support participants’ capabilities, physical conditions, health, and cultural needs.
  • Celebrates participant achievements related to program goals, skill mastery, or overall well-being.
  • Keeps accurate class attendance records using online Group Exercise Management software (MotionVibe).
  • Follows YMCA policies and procedures; responds to emergency situations.
  • Resolves member issues professionally and in alignment with YMCA values.

Requirements

  • At least one year of experience in a Group Exercise setting.
  • Current NCCA-accredited Group Exercise certification (e.g., ACE, AFAA, NASM, NSCA, ISSA).
  • If teaching a specific format (e.g., Yoga, Spin, Les Mills Body Pump/Combat), current certification in that format is required.
  • Experience in health and wellness programming and group instruction.
  • CPR/AED and First Aid certifications.
  • Understanding of internal and external marketing/special events.

  • Ability to interpret and implement the YMCA’s mission and goals into classes and programs.
  • Commitment to creating an inclusive environment for participants of all backgrounds, abilities, and experiences.
  • Strong teamwork and collaboration skills.
  • Effective communication with diverse groups, including adults, youth, teens, seniors, and special populations.
  • Degree in Exercise Science or Physical Education preferred but not required.

Pay

$30.00 - $35.00 per hour.
