About the role
The Athletics & Recreation Department at UC Santa Cruz seeks a Group Exercise Instructor to lead group exercise classes for students and members.
Responsibilities
- Design, choreograph, and lead group exercise classes in formats for which relevant certifications are held.
- Teach, demonstrate, and promote proper safe and effective class-specific exercise techniques and forms.
- Arrive on-site at the classroom, prepare the space and equipment by 5 minutes before the class starts.
- Facilitate pre-class participant check-in, provide introductions and instructions, and maintain a welcoming atmosphere.
- Select and play appropriate music, offer modifications, and frequently update class design.
- Attend required staff meetings and trainings, complete self-evaluations, and respond to supervisor communications promptly.
- Promote, enforce, and adhere to program and facility policies.
- Return equipment and supplies to proper condition, report unsafe conditions, and instruct on proper use and care of facilities and equipment.
- Greet participants warmly, communicate issues and feedback to supervisor, and accurately answer questions.
- Make pre- and post-class announcements, participate in promotional events, and update class information.
Requirements
- Current professional certifications from 1 or more of the following categories: Group Exercise/Fitness Instructor, Yoga Instructor, or format-specific group instruction certification.
- CPR/First Aid/AED certification or ability to obtain it within 60 days of hire.
- High school diploma or equivalent, and/or equivalent experience/training.
- At least 3 months of experience leading group exercise classes with adult participants.
- Ability to relate sensitively to diverse populations and communicate effectively.
- Excellent time management and client service skills.

Pay
Budgeted Salary: By Agreement $36-$63 per class-session.
Schedule
Part-time, Variable Percentage of Time: By Agreement 15%, 6 Hours per Week. Days of the Week: Mon-Fri, weekends as necessary. Shift Includes: Day, Evening & weekends as necessary.
