About the role

Whitgift School, a leading independent boarding and day school for boys aged 10‑18, is seeking a proactive and practical Groundsperson to support the maintenance and preparation of its extensive sports facilities, playing surfaces, and wider estate. The role involves preparing and maintaining cricket pitches, hybrid sports surfaces, lawns, and landscaped areas to a high standard, ensuring the grounds remain safe, attractive, and fit for sporting, educational, and community use. The successful candidate will also assist with school events, equipment maintenance, and the general upkeep of the estate.

Responsibilities

• Prepare and maintain cricket pitches and hybrid sports surfaces.
• Maintain lawns and landscaped areas across the 48‑acre parkland site.
• Ensure all grounds are safe, attractive, and suitable for sporting, educational, and community activities.
• Assist with the setup and breakdown of school events.
• Carry out equipment maintenance and repairs as required.
• Support the general upkeep of the school’s estate.

Requirements

• Experience in grounds maintenance, sports turf management, landscaping, or a similar outdoor environment.
• Strong practical skills and an understanding of health and safety requirements.
• Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
• Flexibility to support a variety of school activities.
• Commitment to maintaining high standards across the school’s grounds and facilities.
• Relevant qualifications in sports turf, horticulture, or grounds maintenance are advantageous.
• Machinery, pesticide, or first‑aid certifications are desirable.
• Willingness to undergo child protection screening, including DBS checks and other safeguarding procedures.

Pay

Point 16 – £31,751 to Point 18 – £33,147 gross per annum, depending on qualifications and relevant experience.

Schedule

Permanent, full‑time, full‑year contract.
