Groundskeeper

Sitter & Barfoot Veterans Care Center—named for two Medal of Honor recipients, Colonel Van Barfoot and Colonel Carl Sitter—provides the gold standard in quality care for Virginia’s Veterans. This single-level facility features 200 single-occupancy rooms across four nursing units.

About the role

The Groundskeeper is responsible for the appearance of the grounds and property of the facility. This position is considered essential personnel and may be required to work in the event of an emergency, pandemic, or facility need. The role participates in the rotating On-Call schedule within the Maintenance Department.

Responsibilities

• Keep the property free of leaves and debris
• Maintain outside trash cans
• Maintain all interior plants
• Inspect lawn, flowers, shrubs, and trees for evidence of insects, fungi, and/or other pests, and take appropriate measures for effective control and maintenance
• Weed and thin flowerbeds
• Connect sprinkler equipment and water lawns, shrubbery, and flowerbeds
• Maintain tools and equipment
• Keep work areas in a clean, safe, and orderly condition
• Perform other duties as assigned within the Maintenance Department’s mission to meet the overall needs of the facility
• Perform light maintenance repairs (e.g., light bulb and filter replacement)

Requirements

• Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record
• Experience in lawn care and associated grounds maintenance
• Ability to work independently, plan assigned work, select and gather necessary materials, tools, and equipment for maximum efficiency and compliance with codes and regulations

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience working at a long-term care facility or health facility

Successful completion of a background criminal history check, FBI fingerprint-based background check, and pre-employment drug test are required. TB skin testing will be conducted upon hire. This position must comply with the federal CMS Omnibus COVID-19 Health Care Staff Vaccination Regulation; all employees must be vaccinated or receive an exemption as a condition of employment.
