Groundskeeper

Responsibilities

• Identifies and prepares soil, removes and replaces plant material; edges and trims groundcover; prunes shrubs to control shape, promote health, control and size; weeds by hand and/or using specialized tools; applies fertilizers, pesticides/herbicides when necessary.
• Maintains trees by pruning to shape, promote health, and control size; removes dead or fallen trees and branches; grinds/removes stumps; plants and inspects trees, reports unsafe or hazardous conditions; removes, replaces, or adjusts tree stakes and ties; applies fertilizers, pesticides/herbicides when necessary.
• Maintains turf by mowing and edging turf by hand or power tools; repairs/renews turf, including seeding, sodding, aeration, and dethatching; applies fertilizers, pesticides/herbicides when necessary.
• Maintains irrigation systems by managing, modifying, and troubleshooting automatic irrigation systems; makes minor repairs such as replacing broken heads/nozzles, repairing broken lines, and valves; hand waters where necessary.
• Collects, loads/unloads, transports, sorts, and disposes of refuse and recycling; performs general litter pick-up around campus grounds; sweeps/blows/cleans roads, walkways, trails, and paved areas, including gutters and ditches with use of manual and power equipment; cleans storm sewers, basins, and vaults.
• Maintains hardscape, site furnishings, and outdoor art work by performing tasks such as hand and power washing, graffiti removal, sanding, staining, waxing, patching, and leveling; performs a variety of manual tasks including digging, trenching, earth movement, and landscape demolition.
• Provides effective customer services ensuring that the client's needs are met; establishes and maintains friendly and professional relationships with customers, colleagues, and visitors exhibiting PRIDE values.
• Documents work as required by Supervisor and/or Manager.

Qualifications

• Current California Driver’s License
• Ability to communicate clearly both orally and in writing in English with customers and department staff at all levels
• Read, write, and follow oral and written instructions
• Demonstrated ability to operate assigned tools and equipment
• Working knowledge of water management and irrigation repair
• Read, write, and follow oral and written instructions
• Demonstrated experience safely operating and maintaining power tools
• Read, write, and follow oral and written instructions in English
• Kneel, stoop, and stand for long periods of time
• Climb and work on extension ladder
• Work without direct supervision and handle multiple projects simultaneously
• Deliver high quality customer service and respond to the customer’s needs
