GROUNDSKEEPER

About the Role

Metropolitan State Hospital, located in Norwalk, Los Angeles County, is seeking multiple Groundskeepers for permanent, full-time positions within the Plant Operations Department. Under the supervision of the Supervising Groundskeeper I and/or Lead Groundskeeper, incumbents will perform a variety of grounds maintenance tasks.

Responsibilities

• Plant, cultivate, water, and spray ornamental plants, shrubs, hedges, trees, and flowers.
• Maintain lawns through mowing, edging, and spraying for weed control.
• Rake leaves, hoe weeds, and perform general grounds maintenance work.
• Trim trees, hedges, and shrubs; erect tree supports.
• Perform sprinkler maintenance and installation.
• Complete other various duties as required.

Requirements

Applicants must meet one of the following minimum qualifications:

• Six months of experience in the California state service performing the duties of a Service Assistant (Maintenance).
• One year of experience in flower gardening and general grounds maintenance work.
• Successful completion of a formal vocational training program in flower gardening and general grounds maintenance work (e.g., Manpower Development Training Act, Work Incentive Program, or similar programs).
• Completion of a two-year curriculum in ornamental horticulture or landscape work at the junior college or college level. (Candidates in their final year may apply but must provide evidence of completion before appointment.)

To be considered, applicants must have eligibility through permanent civil service status, reachability on an employment list, transfer eligibility, or reinstatement eligibility.

Pay

$3,654.00 - $4,534.00 per month. New to State candidates will be hired at the minimum salary of the classification or the minimum of the alternate range when applicable.

Schedule

Permanent, full-time positions. Work location is in Los Angeles County with no telework options (in-office only).

Opened in 1916, DSH-Metropolitan State Hospital operates approximately 826 beds and is situated in Norwalk, 15 miles east of Los Angeles. The hospital serves patients under various commitment categories, including Lanterman-Petris-Short (LPS) Act, Incompetent to Stand Trial (PC 1370), Offenders with Mental Health Disorders (Penal Code Section 2964/2972/2974), and Not Guilty by Reason of Insanity (PC 1026). The facility features an open campus within a security perimeter and is near entertainment venues, beaches, and other attractions.
