About the Role

This classification involves operating equipment and performing manual work related to construction, repair, maintenance, landscaping, and groundskeeping of city streets, roads, drainage systems, parks, and recreation facilities.

Responsibilities

• Operates equipment and performs manual work for construction, maintenance, or repair of city streets, roads, drainage systems, parks, recreation facilities, and other assigned areas.
• Checks and maintains inventory of tools, supplies, and materials for projects or work sites.
• Transports, loads, and unloads materials and equipment used in projects.
• Performs manual tasks related to road construction, maintenance, repair, landscaping, and groundskeeping.
• Operates a variety of equipment, machinery, and tools for department projects.
• Performs general maintenance to keep machinery, equipment, and tools in working condition.
• Uses safety equipment and monitors the work environment to ensure safety.
• Responds to emergency calls during hurricanes, inclement weather, or other emergencies.
• Assists in setting up special events, traffic control, and litter pickup.
• Prepares or completes forms, reports, maintenance logs, and other documentation.
• Reviews, processes, and manages various forms, reports, work orders, maps, and reference materials.
• Communicates with supervisors, employees, other departments, and the public to coordinate work and exchange information.
• Uses telephone and two-way radio to relay messages, provide information, and direct calls.
• Serves as a lead worker on job sites, providing limited direction to other workers.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• One or more years of experience or training in equipment operation, road maintenance/construction, or landscaping/groundskeeping.
• Valid State of Alabama driver’s license.

Skills

• Knowledge of basic arithmetic operations.
• Skill in operating and controlling equipment and machinery with multiple adjustable conditions.
• Ability to compile, record, and transcribe data according to prescribed standards.
• Ability to exchange information within established policies and procedures.
• Ability to utilize reference, descriptive, or advisory data and information.
• Ability to calculate decimals, percentages, fractions, and interpret graphs.

Physical Demands

The role involves moderate physical work, requiring exertion of up to 50 pounds of force. Tasks may include climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and lifting or moving moderately heavy objects. The ability to perceive colors, sounds, depth, texture, and visual cues is necessary. Some tasks require oral communication.

Work Environment

Work is performed outdoors and may expose the employee to dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature extremes, machinery, vibrations, electric currents, traffic hazards, toxic agents, disease, or pathogenic substances.
