This position is for a current vacancy (8 hours per day, 12 months per year) in the Facilities Services Department and also establishes an eligibility list for future vacancies. The eligibility list will remain in effect for 6 months. A valid California driver's license must be submitted with your application.

About the Role

Under the direction of the Facilities Manager, perform a variety of grounds maintenance and gardening duties to beautify assigned grounds and landscaped areas.

Responsibilities

  • Perform grounds maintenance and gardening duties, including mowing, edging, watering, weeding, fertilizing, raking, and cultivating lawns, flower beds, athletic fields, and other landscaped areas.
  • Operate and maintain power tools and equipment used in grounds maintenance.

Requirements

  • Any combination of education, training, and experience equivalent to six months of professional grounds maintenance or landscaping experience.
  • Valid California driver's license.

Examination Process

The examination process may include the following steps:

  • Application Screening (Pass/Fail): Applications will be evaluated based on criteria that meet the department's needs. Highly qualified applicants may undergo a comparative screening.
  • Written Examination (Weighted 50%): Scheduled for Monday, September 16th, 2026. Topics include grounds, equipment & procedures, safety, and human relations. A photo ID and examination pass are required for admittance.
  • Qualifications Appraisal Interview (Weighted 50%): Scheduled for the week of September 22nd, 2026. Applicants must pass each part of the examination to be placed on the eligibility list.

Pay

New hires may receive advanced step placement (up to Step 5) based on:

  • Additional qualifying experience beyond the entry requirement (up to one step for each two years of relevant experience).
  • Additional college-level education beyond the entry requirement (up to one step for each two years of relevant education).

New hires at Step 1 advance to Step 2 after successfully completing a six-month probationary period. Longevity increments are offered based on years of service with the District:

  • 1.20% of base salary after 4 years.
  • 4.10% at 9 years.
  • 7.08% at 14 years.
  • 10.15% at 19 years.
  • 13.31% at 24 years.
  • 16.46% at 29 years.

Education incentives for active, regular classified employees:

  • AA/AS: 2.50% increase on base salary.
  • BA/BS: 4.00% increase on base salary.
  • MA/MS: 5.00% increase on base salary.
  • Ed.D./Ph.D/JD: 6.00% increase on base salary.

  • Health & Welfare: Plan choices include Anthem CDHP PPO 90, Kaiser Permanente CDHP DHMO, Anthem PPO Medical, Kaiser Permanente HMO Medical, and a cash-in-lieu option for full-time employees (up to $5,000 per year).
  • Holidays: Approximately 14 paid holidays per year.
  • Vacation: Earned based on assigned hours (e.g., 1 day per month for 8-hour/day, 12-month employees, up to 12 days per year). Vacation accrual increases with years of service.
  • Sick Leave: 1 day of illness leave per month worked, with unlimited accumulation.
  • Retirement: Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS) and Social Security.
