Campus Facility Services (CFS) provides Indiana University Indianapolis students, faculty, staff, and visitors with a high-quality physical environment through maintenance, grounds, and custodial services for over 70 buildings, parking garages, and 300+ acres of lawns, trees, plantings, sidewalks, and parking lots. The department partners with IU Capital Projects on campus renovation and new construction initiatives.

Responsibilities

  • Mows, trims, and edges turf areas using riding mower, push mower, weed whip, and edger.
  • Mulches, weeds, removes thatch, aerates, and trims and edges around flower beds, walks, pathways, and walls.
  • Prepares planting beds with hand and power tools; integrates soil amendments; plants bulbs, flowers, ground covers, trees, and shrubs; applies mulch.
  • Prunes trees, shrubs, vines, and hedges.
  • Applies seed, fertilizer, and chemicals.
  • Rakes leaves.
  • Performs snow and ice removal with hand tools and power equipment.
  • Participates in a variety of general maintenance tasks, including:
    • Minor wall/drywall repair and painting.
    • Minor plumbing-related repairs (faucet washers, clogged toilets, fountains, irrigation, etc.).
    • Maintaining parking lots and signage, clearing storm water grates, painting curbs and striping lots, and filling potholes.
    • Collecting trash and items to be recycled.
    • Checking lighting fixtures and changing/replacing light bulbs.
  • Transports parts, tools, equipment, and materials.
  • May wash vehicles, check and top off fluid levels, and deliver vehicles for maintenance or servicing.
  • Drives University vehicles as needed.
  • Works any shift as needed, including 24-hour emergency response and snow removal activities.
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned, including general building maintenance.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent (such as HSED or GED).
  • 1 year of experience with landscape or grounds-related work or 1 year of experience with light general maintenance.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to be insured by Indiana University upon date of hire.

    • Riding and push mowers.
    • Power tiller, power edger, weed whip, blower, sprayer.
    • Tractor, skid steer loader, dump-bed truck.
    • Basic hand and power tools, truck and trailer, string trimmer.
  • Ability to perform minor maintenance of grounds-related equipment.
  • Ability to work with a wide variety of cultures and backgrounds.
  • Ability to apply seed, fertilizer, and chemicals.
  • May be required to acquire and maintain position-required certifications.
  • Physical ability to:
    • Remain in a stationary position and move about the workplace for long durations.
    • Operate machinery, tools, and controls.
    • Ascend/descend ladders/stairs and position oneself in low-level positions.
    • Detect a variety of chemicals and/or gases.
    • Ascend to rooftops and move in tight spaces for inspections.
  • Must be able to perform essential functions with or without accommodation.
  • Available to work during inclement weather (e.g., snow and ice) when emergencies require campus support.
