Grounds & Custodian Hybrid

Full-time, 40 hours per week, 52 weeks per year. Schedule: Monday - Friday, 6:30 AM - 3:00 PM. Additional overtime may be required, especially for snow removal during winter.

About the role

This hybrid position supports campus maintenance and operations by focusing on grounds care during spring and summer, and transitioning to custodial work when grounds assistance is not needed. Custodial duties include covering vacancies, leaves of absence, and assisting with building projects.

Responsibilities

• Perform campus grounds care, maintenance, and repair of lawns.
• Mow, trim, and edge campus grounds.
• Operate maintenance machinery, including Kubota for snow plowing, snow removal equipment, lawn tools (trimmers, edgers, blowers), and irrigation systems.
• Troubleshoot irrigation systems as needed.
• Rake and remove grass, tree, and shrub trimmings.
• Monitor campus grounds to ensure proper maintenance.
• Assist maintenance and grounds staff as directed.
• Clean hardwood surfaces, carpet, upholstery, terrazzo, tile, and linoleum flooring.
• Clean restrooms, stairwells, classrooms, and offices.
• Order supplies and cleaning products.
• Replace light bulbs, including fluorescent tubes.
• Perform snow removal and facility opening/security.
• Unclog toilets and sinks.
• Identify and use appropriate chemicals and cleaning fluids for surfaces.
• Operate pallet jacks, scissor lifts, and other custodial equipment (e.g., carpet extractors, floor scrubbers, wet vacuums, ladders, carpet bonnet machines).
• Perform light electrical and plumbing work (e.g., using pliers, screwdrivers, plungers).
• Drive a vehicle as needed.
• Regular in-person attendance is required; overtime may be necessary for weather-related emergencies (e.g., snow plowing).
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Valid driver’s license required.
• Work experience in grounds or landscaping preferred; on-the-job training available for custodial duties.
• Commercial cleaning experience in an educational environment preferred.

Skills

• Ability to operate landscape maintenance and snow removal equipment (e.g., edgers, weed whips, snow blowers, salt spreaders).
• Experience with carpet extractors, floor scrubbers, wet vacuums, ladders, and custodial chemicals.
• Proficiency with general custodial tools (mops, buckets, brooms, dusters) and power sprayers.
• Ability to perform light electrical and plumbing tasks (e.g., replacing light bulbs, unclogging sinks).
• Strong communication skills (verbal and written) for customer service with faculty, staff, students, and the public.
• Ability to work independently and adjust to a flexible, changing schedule.
• Good attendance and punctuality.

Physical Demands

• Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
• Work indoors (with or without climate control) and outdoors in all weather conditions.
• Ability to work a flexible 24-hour schedule based on weather conditions.

Pay

$21.65 - $25.18 per hour.
