Job Summary

The Grossing Tech is responsible for daily activities associated with the processing of tissues as received from surgical procedures; participates in the education of pathology residents in tissue processing and participates in the quality assurance activities that are associated with these processes.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in a science-related field (major coursework in the biological sciences; preferably in chemistry, biology, or immunology) from an accredited university
  • Graduate of a NAACLS-accredited Pathologists’ Assistant Training Program and be an AAPA (American Association of Pathologists' Assistants) Fellow or eligible
  • Certification by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists preferred
  • 1 year of histology and/or grossing experience required
  • Experience with grossing routine specimens (gallbladder, appendix, uteruses' etc.)

Responsibilities

  • Performs gross examinations, dissection, and description of tissues
  • Workload is prioritized and managed to meet expected Turn-Around-Time (TAT) and specific specimen requirements
  • Maintains competence and adds new skills as procedures and technologies change
  • Tissue sampling, gross descriptions, and dictations are accurate and according to procedure
  • Specimens are photographed when appropriate for archival purposes
  • Disposes of specimens as per guidelines and accreditation requirements
  • Maintains, repairs, and troubleshoots all equipment contacting company technical service representative as required
  • Maintains digital equipment, keeps ready for use, produces digital photos, and assists with uploading and storage of digital files
  • Ensures that gross room and frozen section areas are kept clean at all times, all tools maintained in assigned areas, etc.
  • Maintains tissue storage area/racks as per guidelines and accreditation requirements
  • Trains and educates laboratory personnel and residents in the processing of surgical tissues
  • Communicates gross room procedures to staff in a clear and concise manner
  • Solves problems with appropriate consultation and communication to supervisors and medical staff
  • Evaluates the performance of residents in conjunction with managerial and medical staff
  • Demonstrates knowledge of quality, safety and compliance programs and ensures that these principles are applied in the Gross room
  • Complies with compliance guidelines for testing and reporting activities
  • Handles chemicals, hazardous waste and sharps accurately and safely
  • Collects and summarizes Quality Assurance data for reporting as needed
  • Makes suggestions for Process Improvement initiatives
  • Develops, implements, and maintains Surgical Pathology protocols
  • Ensures that the procedure manual is updated annually to reflect current methodology, medical staff requests and all federal, state and laboratory accreditation standards
  • Uses electronic information/data systems to access and input tissue sample information and departmental communications accurately
  • Maintains accuracy and quality for activities
