Grossing Assistant II - Copley - Day Shift - Full Time

What You Will Do

Provide accurate and timely processing of simple (Levels 1, 2A) pathology laboratory specimens.

Required Qualifications

• Associate's Degree in laboratory science or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution
• Or other education/training equivalent to the above that includes at least 60 semester hours or equivalent from an accredited institution
• This education must include 24 semester hours of medical technology courses, OR 24 semester hours of science courses that include 6 semester hours of chemistry, 6 semester hours of biology, and 12 semester hours of chemistry, biology or medical laboratory technology in any combination
• Laboratory training including either completion of a clinical laboratory training program approved or accredited by the ASHES, NAACLS, or other organization approved by HHS (note that this training may be included in the 60 semester hours listed above), OR at least 3 months documented laboratory training in each specialty in which the individual performs high complexity testing
• Individuals who attended foreign schools must have an evaluation of their credentials determining equivalency of their education to education obtained in the United States

Preferred Qualifications

• Grossing experience with Level 1 and 2A specimens
• Frozen section experience

• Performs required preventive and corrective maintenance on equipment/tools
• Reports and documents equipment/tool/reagent issues and failures
• Checks inventory expiration dates and demonstrates ability to evaluate consumables (reagent/supply) inventory to prevent shortages; alerts ordering personnel
• Removes defective equipment from use, documents problem, and notifies appropriate personnel for repair; verifies equipment inspections are up-to-date
• Performs or assists with pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical tests and processes by evaluating quality control systems, data, and outcomes
• Completes and assesses all QC procedures in place with indicated corrective action and resolution as needed
• Captures and completes processes in place to meet standards established to maintain quality testing
• Identifies errors and follows-through with investigation, correction, documentation, and notification to appropriate caregiver and lab leadership
• Communicates, cooperates, collaborates and takes initiative to be an effective team member
• Proactively initiates communication and works cooperatively with others to successfully complete work assignments
• Demonstrates positive verbal and non-verbal communication skills
• Completes documentation legibly, accurately, and timely
• Stays informed through staff meetings, electronic communication, in-services, and educational opportunities
• Establishes effective working relationships between internal and external customers
• Sets and validates messages by clarifying expectations and verifying understanding of agreements/action plans
• Describes gross features of full scope of tissues for processing (level 1) and simple (level 2A) surgical specimens according to professional standards
• Prepares tissue samples for processing for light microscopy
• Selects samples for special studies such as flow cytometry, cytogenetics, cultures
• Demonstrate proficiency with cutting frozen section blocks and staining frozen section and touch preparation slides, in a timely manner within the standards of quality
• Assists with specimen accessioning
• Photographs gross specimens
• Assure proper maintenance of equipment with documentation
• Completes processes without error using written policies, procedures and other appropriate resources; identifies issues in policies or procedures
• Performs or assists with pre-analytical and post analytical procedures and demonstrates assessment of testing factors with regard to patient age and population specific groups
