About the Role
This position is responsible for providing professional grooming services for dogs or cats using knowledge of grooming styles and techniques.
Responsibilities
- Deliver exceptional customer service
- Follow and demonstrate all Petsense by Tractor Supply Mission and Values
- Maintain regular and predictable attendance; work scheduled shifts, including varied hours, days, nights, weekends, and overtime as dictated by business needs
- Answer phone and schedule appointments
- Assist in generating business by calling existing and new customers, scheduling appointments, making follow-up calls, sending reminders, and verifying vaccinations
- Book appointments and greet pets as they arrive
- Thoroughly complete 7-point check-in
- Report all accidents and injuries to the Store Manager immediately
- Follow bathing and grooming procedures as outlined
- Clean ears, clip nails, and perform other needed services
- Adhere to customer instructions regarding clipping patterns
- Clip dog’s hair according to determined pattern using electric clippers, combs, and shears
- Comb and shape dogs’ coat
- Use non-physical techniques to keep animals calm
- Complete and maintain customer and company forms
- Properly and completely fill out required grooming forms
- Adhere to all safety rules and procedures, and follow all safety standards
- Monitor and watch for the Seven Critical Signs of Stress throughout the full appointment
- Sweep, vacuum, clean, and sanitize cages and grooming areas
- Sanitize and maintain grooming tools and equipment to prevent injury and disease spread
- Assist in store operations as needed
Requirements
- Minimum of 1-year experience grooming or styling pets
- Must be comfortable working with dogs and cats
- Must provide own tools (clippers, blades, shears) or be willing to purchase required tools
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Successful completion of Paragon Level 1 & 2 training provided by Petsense
- Ability to read, write, and count accurately
Skills
- Operate and use grooming tools and equipment, including bathing tubs, brushes, steel combs, barber shears, scissors, clippers, dryers, and bathing products
- Communicate effectively with customers
- Display compassion and care for animals
- Exhibit attention to detail
- Lift and carry pets generally weighing 0–50 pounds (up to 75 pounds independently; over 100 pounds assisted)
- Work varied hours, including days, nights, and weekends
- Stand and walk for long periods
- Safely work around pets and pet waste
Working Conditions
- Favorable indoor working environment with moderate noise
- Exposure to wet conditions, particularly when bathing dogs
- Exposure to cats and dogs of all sizes, breeds, and temperaments
- Exposure to sharp grooming instruments, perfumed shampoos, soaps, pets, and pet waste
- Work shifts vary by store but are generally no less than 4 hours and may exceed 10 hours
- Indoor floors and outdoor lots are hard surfaces (concrete, asphalt); lighting and temperature are adequate
Physical Requirements
- Ability to move and transfer live animals, equipment, and merchandise weighing up to 50 pounds
- Ability to lift and carry pets weighing up to 75 pounds independently; over 100 pounds with assistance
- Ability to push and pull merchandise up to 2,000 pounds with proper material handling equipment (e.g., pallet jack, dolly, or U-boat)
- Ability to walk, stand, and maintain a stationary position for a full shift
- Ability to frequently move around the salon to groom, bathe, clean, and maintain the salon
- Ability to safely access all areas of the store, including the selling floor, stock area, register area, and salon
- Ability to occasionally lift or reach overhead
- Ability to stand, twist, bend, kneel, crouch, stoop, and squat frequently to groom, bathe, clean, and stock
- Ability to handle and be in contact with live animals
- Ability to operate store equipment such as computers and cash registers
