About the role
Fives Group, headquartered in Paris, France, is an industrial engineering group founded in 1812. It designs and supplies machines, process equipment, and production lines for major industrial sectors including aluminum, steel, tube and pipe, glass, automotive, aerospace, logistics, cement, and energy.
Responsibilities
- Plans a sequence of standard and recognized operations.
- Makes set-ups and adjustments on special and difficult work.
- Selects speeds, feeds, wheels, and holding devices.
- Dresses wheel as required.
- Positions, aligns, and secures workpiece in machine, sets grinding head to conform with specifications, makes required adjustments, and grinds parts of various styles and sizes.
- Starts and observes machine operation to detect malfunctions or out-of-tolerance machining and adjusts machine controls or control media as required.
- Studies and works from part drawings, specifications, charts, etc. (on a variety of steels, alloys, and castings) to determine dimensions and tolerances of finished workpiece.
- Works to very close tolerances using a range of measuring instruments such as scales, squares, calipers, micrometers, verniers, indicators, air gauges, special fixed and adjustable measuring devices.
- Detects unusual conditions, defective materials, or operating difficulties and reports to proper supervision.
- Maintains machine and work area in a clean and orderly manner.
- Provides training and technical support to other employees within the grinding department, as required.
- Confers with engineers, production personnel, programmers, or others to resolve machining or assembly problems.
- May also operate and provide basic maintenance of the straightening presses and manual lathes.
Qualifications
- Over three years of related experience or an Associate's Degree in a Machinist program.
Skills
- Knowledge of grinding methods, wheels, cutting qualities of metals.
- Knowledge of Geometric dimensioning and tolerencing.
- Ability to use shop math together with the use of complicated drawings, specifications, charts, tables, etc.
- Knowledge of various types of precision measuring instruments such as inside and outside micrometers, vernier calipers, Snap gauge, micrometer depth gauges, and dial indicators.
- Able to use independent judgment to plan, perform, and make decisions as to sequence of set-ups, operations, and processes within a sequence of standard and recognized procedures.
- Able to operate machines on various styles and sizes of parts requiring grinding of various operations.
- Able to work on a variety of metals selecting proper feed, speed, etc., and work to close tolerances.
- Able to work with Metric or English drawings.
- Able to lift up to 40 pounds.
