1898 & Co., a division of Burns & McDonnell, is seeking an experienced Grid Systems Solution Architect to provide utility grid operations modernization consulting services for electric utility clients. The selected candidate will join the Enterprise System & Integration team, focused on delivering high-value enterprise solution services through leading technologies.

About the role

The Grid Systems Solution Architect will provide professional consulting services focused on solutions such as Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA), Energy Management Systems (EMS), Outage Management Systems (OMS), Distribution Management Systems (DMS), Advanced Distribution Management Systems (ADMS), and Distributed Energy Resource Management Systems (DERMS).

This position will lead efforts to identify and deliver grid operations services supporting grid modernization assessments, technology roadmaps, software upgrades, and implementations. The role involves strategic guidance, research, planning, and best practices to help client executive leaders make investment decisions aligned with long-term organizational vision.

Responsibilities

  • Apply industry experience and leading practices to architect, design, develop, and implement SCADA, EMS, OMS, DMS, ADMS, and DERMS solutions supporting complex business requirements.
  • Utilize in-depth knowledge of SCADA, EMS, OMS, DMS, ADMS, and DERMS to support commissioning, testing, and deployment.
  • Provide field support, troubleshooting, and project coordination to enhance and maintain SCADA, EMS, OMS, DMS, ADMS, and DERMS, including leading commissioning efforts and performing point testing or field data verification for advanced distribution applications (e.g., FLISR, VVO, DER Dispatch).
  • Lead or assist with program estimating, planning, budgeting, and delivery execution.
  • Support analysis, design, build, test, defect triaging, configuration, and deployment activities.
  • Support Enterprise Program Management activities using methodologies such as Waterfall and Agile.
  • Ensure successful project completion by budget, scope, quality, and attainment of business objectives; supervise project status, progress, and milestones.
  • Oversee overall project quality of deliverables.
  • Act as an application and solution architect, contributing to application and technical architecture teams.
  • Assist with or lead business process design activities to define complete application requirements: functional, quality, integration, and security.
  • Collaborate with application designers to create high-level end-to-end integration solutions, mapping data between applications.
  • Create an inventory of cross-application interactions or interfaces (business events or messages) based on activity and data flow diagrams.
  • Validate that application requirements meet business process needs, are within scope, and are internally consistent.
  • Validate that integration solutions and architecture designs appropriately utilize integration architecture components.
  • Lead or assist with high-level project communications and status reporting to executive teams.
  • Serve as a central point of contact for all project interdependencies, internal and external.
  • Assist with timely development and implementation of all system stages.
  • Provide input and influence project execution processes and quality assurance/quality control protocols using project execution experience.
  • Ensure compliance with company and site safety policies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, Business, Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field is preferred. Applicable work experience may substitute for the degree requirement.
  • Minimum 7 years of experience providing enterprise or operations architecture strategies, integration solutions, and services using various applications and technical platforms.
  • Preferred: 5 years of experience in the Electric Utility Industry or equivalent.
  • Strong enterprise architecture and integration skills, including data architecture, cloud architecture, middleware, communications, and other architectural methods.
  • Experience in large-scale enterprise transformation projects using industry-standard enterprise architecture strategies and technologies.
  • Experience with electric utility clients in implementing and integrating operational systems such as OMS, DMS, ADMS, AMI, Distribution Automation, and Distributed Energy Resources (DER).
  • Strong ability to influence or lead project execution.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience with leading-edge applications, operations technology, and solutions using industry-standard tools.
  • Experience with project execution methodologies, including Waterfall and Agile.
  • Experience developing executive-level technology assessments and roadmap strategies focusing on enterprise and operational technologies for utilities industry clients.
