Graphic Designer
About the role
The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), the nation’s leading advocate for children’s health, seeks a talented Graphic Designer to create and typeset content for print and digital distribution. This role involves designing, composing, and producing innovative artwork and visual elements for AAP publishing projects, collaborating with staff, editors, and authors to ensure accuracy and quality.
Responsibilities
- Create and maintain visual branding for a broad range of publication portfolios, including clinical and professional titles, digital products, textbooks, parenting/consumer titles, and patient education materials.
- Incorporate creative use of color, typography, layout, and composition aligned with content, organizational brand standards, and audience needs.
- Ensure accuracy, quality, and timely production of design concepts from creation through final file preparation and delivery.
- Conduct quality control reviews for layouts, typography, image placement, and final production files.
- Stay current on emerging trends, software applications, publishing technologies, and industry best practices.
- Recommend cost-saving design and production solutions while maintaining quality and brand standards.
- Present design concepts for review and incorporate feedback from authors, editors, and staff.
- Develop and maintain editorial style and formatting guidelines for manuscript preparation.
- Maintain the AAP brand Identity Program, updating the Identity Program website with current guidelines, templates, and resources.
- Serve as a publishing design consultant for digital and web-based products, providing guidance on visual design, accessibility, functionality, and technical standards.
- Participate in cross-functional project teams to determine effective formats and visual designs for publications.
- Coordinate with outside vendors for image, graphical, and digital asset development.
- Maintain organized digital asset libraries.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in graphic design or related discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and work experience.
- At least three years’ experience in graphic design and typesetting for print and digital distribution, with proficiency in typography, layout design, color theory, and print production processes.
- Experience within a publishing, editorial, academic, or association environment, preferably with health-related content.
- Proficiency in MS Office, Adobe Creative Cloud (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop), and Macintosh platforms.
- Ability to learn and apply new technologies, including AI; experience with virtual meeting platforms (e.g., Teams) and document collaboration platforms (e.g., SharePoint) preferred.
- Strong analytical, organizational, verbal/written communication, interpersonal, and customer service skills.
- Ability to think creatively, take initiative, manage multiple priorities under deadlines, and work both independently and collaboratively.

- Some evening/weekend work and travel required.
Pay
The base pay range for this position is $70,368.96 - $74,278.36. Compensation decisions consider relevant experience, skills, certifications, geographic location, business needs, and internal equity.
