Graduate Researcher - Warm Dense Matter Modeling
About the Role
The Materials and Physical Data Group of the X-Computational Physics Division (XCP-5) seeks a highly motivated graduate student research intern to develop and optimize a code for modeling properties of warm dense matter. The successful candidate will familiarize themselves with multiple scattering theory, learn to operate LANL's KKR code, and optimize it for large-scale simulations. This position offers an exciting, flexible, and scientifically challenging work environment with opportunities to collaborate across LANL and beyond.
Responsibilities
- Develop and optimize code for modeling warm dense matter properties.
- Apply multiple scattering theory to model electronic structures of materials under various conditions.
- Operate and optimize LANL's KKR code for large-scale simulations.
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams on constitutive models, equations of state, and physical data libraries.
Requirements
- Education: Completed undergraduate degree in physics, applied math, computer science, or related field. Must be currently enrolled in a graduate degree program at an accredited university.
- Background: Strong foundation in physics, applied math, computer science, mechanical engineering, or materials science.
- Computing Skills: Experience with scientific computing and programming in Fortran.
- Communication: Strong interpersonal and teamwork skills, with a willingness to collaborate across diverse scientific communities.
Qualifications
- Desired Experience: Familiarity with computational or simulation-based methods, particularly in physics and applied math.
- Advanced Computing: Experience with high-performance computing, Unix/Linux environments, and Python is preferred.
- Publications: Demonstrated expertise through publications and technical presentations in computational science.
Work Location
This position has the potential for remote work, defined as working offsite more than 2 hours from the Laboratory location. Periodic onsite reporting may be required, at management's discretion.
