Graduate Nurse - RN - Medical

About the Role

This position is for a Graduate Nurse (RN) in a medical unit, functioning under the supervision of a currently-licensed Registered Nurse. The role involves delivering patient-centered care in accordance with McLeod Health’s Service Excellence Standards and Core Values.

Responsibilities

• Assess patient needs through history, observation, physical examination, and diagnostic data analysis.
• Plan and provide individualized nursing care tailored to patients' holistic and age-specific needs.
• Implement appropriate nursing interventions aligned with the Plan of Care and physician-prescribed medical plans.
• Demonstrate competency in unit-specific expectations, including:
  • Scheduling and emergency management (fire safety, evacuation, hazardous materials, emergency codes, security alerts, and survey readiness).
  • Identifying and utilizing resources (e.g., Patient Care Supervisor, Clinical Nurse Manager, Nurse Educator, therapy services, pharmacy, palliative care, and security).
  • Patient satisfaction initiatives (hourly rounds, GET IT scripting, service recovery, and communication boards).
  • Patient safety initiatives (patient identification, effective communication, labeled specimens, clinical alarms, infection control, and universal protocol).
  • Core measures (documentation, nursing responsibilities, admission/discharge processes).
• Carry out physician orders, including reviewing standing orders, scanning to pharmacy, and verifying ED records.
• Utilize the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) for:
  • Census and patient assignment.
  • Computer Provider Order Entry (CPOE).
  • Reviewing and acknowledging new orders, results, labs, clinical summaries, and dictations.
  • Critical results management.
• Conduct nursing handoff and bedside report, including document review and hemodialysis consent.
• Complete procedural paperwork (consent forms, pre/post-procedure checklists, time-out documentation, and patient education).
• Maintain patient privacy and security in compliance with HIPAA and organizational policies.
• Provide patient education using Lexicomp leaflets, teach-back methodology, and bedside education channels.
• Utilize downtime toolkit when applicable.
• Manage patient admissions, discharges, and transfers according to policies and procedures.
• Reconcile and administer medications in accordance with policies and procedures.
• Perform standard procedures, including venipunctures, blood cultures, blood bank bandings, and capillary collections.
• Administer blood and blood products per policy.
• Perform waived testing and apply/document patient restraints as needed.
• Utilize code management protocols (crash cart, rapid response, end-of-life care).
• Conduct full systems assessments, shift assessments, and re-assessments per policy.
• Apply infection control precautions (airborne, droplet, aplasia, contact) and proper donning/doffing techniques.
• Provide care for unit-specific tasks (bladder scanner, vein finder, daily weights, Ronco Nurse Call System).
• Implement preventative care for hospital-acquired conditions (falls, CAUTI, CLABSI).
• Conduct hourly rounds using service excellence standards.
• Foster a compassionate and respectful environment for patients, families, and visitors.
• Utilize health and safety equipment to protect patients and staff.
• Follow standard work for central lines, foley catheters, pressure ulcers, ventilators, restraints, and fall-risk patients.
• Contribute to unit growth through evidence-based practices and professional development.
• Float to assist in other like units as needed.

Requirements

• Graduate from an accredited registered nursing program.
• Must possess a valid BLS certification (AHA only).
• Must function under the supervision of a currently-licensed Registered Nurse; supervision involves critical observation, direction, and evaluation of performance.
• Not eligible if the candidate has failed the RN license examination.
