About the role

The Earth and Environmental Science (EES) Graduate Student Program offers paid internships for graduate students in various Earth science and data-driven disciplines. Interns gain hands-on technical experience, mentorship, and professional development opportunities through a formalized work plan.

Responsibilities

  • Developing and applying innovative methods and tools to tackle complex Earth science problems in areas like global security, sustainable energy, analytical geochemistry, energy infrastructure, and environmental change.
  • Conducting research and analysis to inform national security missions and decisions.
  • Collaborating with a multidisciplinary team to design and implement research projects.
  • Participating in fieldwork, laboratory experiments, and data analysis to advance our understanding of the Earth system.
  • Staying at the forefront of the latest research and technological advancements in the field, and contributing to the development of new knowledge and solutions.
  • Applying AI and ML techniques for Earth systems modeling, remote sensing, environmental data assimilation, uncertainty quantification, and predictive analytics.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in an accredited graduate degree program in any Physical Science discipline.
  • Must be enrolled in at least 6 semester credit hours (or full-time equivalent) in an accredited degree-granting program.
  • Entering graduate students must provide documentation indicating matriculation into an appropriate degree program.
  • Must currently have and maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.2 on a 4.0 scale (or equivalent).

Qualifications

  • Computer programming in support of scientific data acquisition or analysis.
  • Experimental techniques currently used within your selected scientific field(s).
  • Laboratory experience demonstrating attention to detail and commitment to safety.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate (verbal and written) well in a professional scientific context.
  • Commitment to achieving results in a complex social and organizational setting.

Skills

  • Knowledge and skills in computer programming, experimental techniques, laboratory experience, communication, and teamwork.
