One-on-one academic support role for graduate students. Help students identify challenges, develop improvement strategies, and connect with university resources.
About the role
- In-person position requiring 220 working hours during the academic year
- Weekly schedule is flexible and will be determined with the supervisor based on the GA’s class schedule and departmental needs; once established, the schedule should remain consistent throughout the semester
- Tuition remission for 12 graduate credit hours per academic year (6 fall, 6 spring)
Responsibilities
- Meet individually with students to provide academic success coaching
- Help students develop skills related to:
- Time management and prioritization
- Study skills
- Goal setting
- Communicating with professors
- Balancing academic and personal commitments
- Creating plans to catch up when falling behind
- Building academic confidence
- Connect students with appropriate campus resources and support services
- Provide outreach to students identified through Navigate alerts, progress reports, midterm grades, and other Student Success initiatives
- Record student meeting notes and outreach in Navigate
- Participate in training and meetings with the Student Success team as needed
- Perform other job-related duties as assigned by supervisor
- Conduct themselves as a professional staff member while in the office, including dress, behavior, and attitude
Requirements
- Must be admitted and enrolled in a graduate program at Avila University
- International students are not eligible for graduate assistantships
- Bachelor’s degree required
- Must maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to work effectively one-on-one with students
- Strong organization and time-management skills
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and professional boundaries
- Experience working with college students is preferred but not required
- Commitment to contributing to a climate that supports a diverse student body, serves first-generation college students, multilingual learners, and contributions to equity and social justice
