About the Role
To create a flexible elementary grade program and a class environment favorable to learning and personal growth; to establish effective rapport with pupils; to motivate pupils to develop skills, attitudes, and knowledge in accordance with each pupil's ability; and to establish good relationships with parents and with other staff members.
Responsibilities
- Instruct pupils in citizenship and basic subject matter specified in state law and administrative regulations and procedures of the school district.
- Develop lesson plans and instructional materials and provide individualized and small group instruction to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each pupil.
- Translate lesson plans into learning experiences to best utilize available time for instruction.
- Establish and maintain standards of pupil behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom.
- Evaluate pupils' academic and social growth, keep appropriate records, and prepare progress reports.
- Communicate with parents through conferences and other means to discuss pupil's progress and interpret the school program.
- Identify pupil needs and cooperate with other professional staff members in assessing and helping pupils solve health, attitude, and learning problems.
- Create an effective environment for learning through functional and attractive displays, bulletin boards, and interest centers.
- Maintain professional competence through in-service education activities provided by the district and self-selected growth activities.
- Select and requisition books and instructional aids; maintain required inventory records.
- Supervise pupils in out-of-classroom activities during the assigned working day.
- Administer group standardized tests in accordance with the district testing program.
- Participate in curriculum development programs as required.
- Participate in faculty committees and the sponsorship of pupil activities.
- Implement an individual education program for special needs students.
- Supervise classroom and students (aides, volunteers, and parent helpers where appropriate).
- Perform general supervisory duties as scheduled.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree (Master’s Degree for certain positions). Additional credits required for completion of certification requirements.
- Valid Connecticut Teaching Certificate.
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, and governmental regulations.
- Ability to write memos, reports, and correspondence, and to effectively present information and respond to questions from administrators, staff, parents, and the general public.
- Basic mathematical skills, including the ability to compute rate, ratio, percent, and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
- Basic knowledge and experience with standard hardware and software applications, including email, word processing, accounting, databases, and presentations.
- Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations with limited standardization.
- Ability to interpret instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
- Ability to apply knowledge of current research and teaching competencies to instructional programs.
- Ability to plan and implement lessons based on school objectives and the needs and abilities of students.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with students, peers, and parents.
- Skill in oral and written communication.
- Ability to perform duties with awareness of district requirements, Board of Education policies, and the code of professional responsibility for teachers.
Physical Demands
- Frequently required to stand, talk, hear, walk, and sit.
- May occasionally push or lift up to fifty (50) pounds, such as boxes of books and AV/VCR carts.
- Directly responsible for the safety, well-being, or work output of other people.
- Specific vision abilities required include close vision to read handwritten or typed material and the ability to adjust focus.
- Must meet multiple demands from several people and interact with the public and other staff.
Work Environment
- Noise level is moderate to loud.
- Duties are performed indoors and occasionally outdoors.
Pay
As per negotiated contract (BPS Contracts).
