About the role

Help shape energy policy and advocacy across North Dakota and Montana (as needed) by building relationships with policymakers, monitoring local, legislative, and regulatory developments, and advancing company positions on issues that matter to our business, customers, and communities. This role serves as a trusted liaison and strategic voice in support of ALLETE’s long-term goals and stakeholder interests.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain a broad knowledge of local, legislative, and regulatory processes as well as issues of importance to ALLETE’s business units and customers across local, state, and federal levels under the guidance of government affairs management.
  • Develop and maintain working relationships; communicate company positions on issues and serve as liaison with elected and appointed public officials, legislative and agency staff at all levels of government.
  • Help ensure adequate internal review of pending and proposed legislation and regulations to determine impact on the company and its customers; identify priority issues; influence public policy to protect the interests of the company’s stakeholders; enhance the company image by being recognized as a credible source of information.
  • Scope of government affairs responsibilities includes North Dakota, Montana, and Washington, DC, and includes engagement with local jurisdictions within these regions.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Three years or more of experience in local, state, and/or federal government, or a similar level of experience working with the local, state, and/or federal governmental process. A Master's degree may be considered for up to one year of work experience.
  • A valid driver’s license and the responsibility to maintain it.
  • Willingness to work non-traditional hours and to travel to attend stakeholder meetings, regulatory or legislative proceedings, or other events.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to effectively build and maintain internal and external working relationships.

Pay

The expected annual compensation range for this position is $76,500 - $95,500. Compensation offered to the selected candidate will vary depending on relevant knowledge, skills, training, and experience.
