About the role

Goodwill Store Associate may be trained on all non-management aspects of store operations. Under general supervision of the Store Manager or manager-in-charge, the Retail Store Associate assists in overall store operations including receiving and processing donations, completing sales transactions on the POS system, displaying and pulling items from the sales floor, and maintaining a safe, clean, and welcoming environment for donors and shoppers.

Schedule

Will typically be required to work regular weekend (i.e. Saturday, Sunday), holiday, and evening hours customary to the retail trade.

Responsibilities

Store Operations

  • Sort, price, and display quality merchandise for sale in the store
  • Meet quality and quantity production standards to maximize sales revenue
  • Properly discard unsellable merchandise to appropriate containers (e.g., Outlet, Salvage, Trash)
  • Maximize used goods processing through proper application of Goodwill techniques, including sorting, preparing, and pricing items for sale
  • Meet or exceed production goals on a consistent basis
  • Follow store rotation schedule by completing pulls at scheduled times in assigned areas of the store
  • Maintain sales floor appearance, cleanliness, and shopping environment (e.g., floor care, fitting rooms, cash register areas, aisles, trash receptacles, lights, restrooms, glass showcases, window ledges, doors)
  • Maintain an odor-free environment
  • Assist with general light maintenance on immediate grounds (e.g., building exterior, parking lot, windows, doors, sidewalks, parking lot lights, dumpster area, landscape, stray shopping carts, store entry, and signage)

Customer Service

  • Assist shoppers on the sales floor in locating and selecting merchandise
  • Complete sales transactions on the POS system with accuracy and in a timely manner
  • Accept donations from donors by greeting them at their vehicles and assisting with carrying donated items into the store
  • Always offer a receipt for donated merchandise
  • Assist shoppers by carrying larger, heavier items to their vehicles after sales transactions, as appropriate
  • Demonstrate good judgment at cash wrap by protecting Agency assets such as cash and jewelry

Safety, Security, and Loss Prevention

  • Assist in maintaining store and surrounding premises to keep clean and free of safety hazards
  • Adhere to all safety, health, and emergency procedures
  • Utilize designated staging area for "Z" racks filled with merchandise
  • Keep aisles, corridors, and production areas free of clutter and unobstructed for emergency exits
  • Secure sharp objects such as knives in a designated area for display
  • Handle breakable objects carefully and display them properly
  • Utilize required PPE when completing assigned tasks
  • Spread ice melt on sidewalks and pathways during slippery conditions prior to store opening and throughout the day, as assigned
  • Shovel sidewalks, loading docks, and donor areas to keep clear of ice and snow, as assigned
  • Report observations or suspicions of theft and other wrongdoing
  • Assist with proper loading/unloading of trucks, use of seals, and documentation for internal transfer of goods

Requirements

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED preferred, but not required
  • One to three months of related experience or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Students under 18 still enrolled in high school may be hired for part-time positions but cannot operate hazardous equipment (e.g., compactor, floor cleaning machine, straddle stacker) and must follow CT DOL regulations for minors

Skills

  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos
  • Ability to communicate with customers in one-on-one situations
  • Basic mathematical skills (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals)
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions in written, oral, or diagram form
  • Ability to deal with standardized situations with occasional or no variables
  • Ability to operate material handling equipment (e.g., hand truck, straddle stacker, electric pallet jack)

Physical Demands

  • Regularly required to stand and use hands to finger, handle, or feel
  • Frequently required to walk, reach with hands and arms, and talk or hear
  • Occasionally required to climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl
  • Must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds
  • Regularly required to push crates (on wheels) weighing up to 600 pounds on flat or sloped surfaces
  • Assist customers with unloading donations and carrying purchases, including large/heavy items (e.g., furniture, appliances, electronics)
  • Place large objects on the sales floor for display or in crates/carts for disposal; use hand trucks when possible and seek assistance for heavy objects
  • Specific vision abilities required: close vision, distance vision, and color vision

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

  • Protective eyewear must be worn while preparing cleaning solution and dispensing fluid into floor cleaning machines
  • Protective gloves (cloth/leather) and eyewear must be worn while using a push-stick to propel material into the trash compactor
  • Latex or nitrile gloves available for sorting credentials (optional)
  • Protective gloves must be worn when handling pallets and boards to prevent puncture or laceration from splintered wood

Work Environment

  • Occasionally exposed to wet/humid conditions, moving mechanical parts, high/precarious places, fumes or airborne particles, toxic/caustic chemicals, outside weather conditions, and risk of electrical shock
  • Moderate noise level typical of a busy retail environment
