About the role
The Maine Appalachian Trail Club (MATC) seeks an AmeriCorps Member for its wilderness education program, which expands equitable access to the Appalachian Trail in Maine. The AmeriCorps A.T. Outreach Steward will engage youth groups and underrepresented communities—including public school students, people with disabilities, and other community groups—in conservation education, hiking, camping, and trail stewardship experiences.
Responsibilities
- Engage youth groups and underrepresented communities in conservation education, hiking, camping, and trail stewardship experiences.
- Reduce barriers to accessing the Appalachian Trail.
- Cultivate lasting connections between participants and wilderness landscapes.
- Lead stewardship and trail maintenance initiatives.
- Deliver high-quality Leave No Trace education informed by hands-on trail management experience.
Requirements
- Must be 17 years of age or older.
- Strong interest in environmental education and outdoor recreation.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Passion for engaging diverse youth and communities.
- Basic first aid certification.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Experience working with youth and/or underrepresented communities preferred.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work flexible hours, including weekends and evenings.
