About the role

The Texas General Land Office is seeking a Government Relations Specialist (Legislative Liaison) within the Governmental Relations Department. This position involves coordinating activities and serving as a liaison between the agency and governmental and legislative entities. It may involve supervising the work of others.

Responsibilities

  • Participates in agency activities related to the legislative session; attends legislative hearings and meetings with legislators, legislative staff, and other legislative liaisons.
  • Prepares comprehensive summaries and reports of these meetings and hearings.
  • Aids in creating fiscal impact statements and drafts background summaries, bill analyses, and other requested documents related to legislation and policy issues.
  • Proactively communicates with state and local officials, as well as with other state agencies, to facilitate coordination and collaboration.
  • Collaborates with internal subject matter experts within the Texas General Land Office to deliver strategic government relations guidance and insights.
  • Drafts detailed responses to legislative inquiries and meticulously reviews and edits correspondence to ensure accuracy and clarity.

Qualifications

  • Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major coursework in a field relevant to the assignment.
  • Three (3) to Five (5) years of experience working with the federal or state legislature, legislative staff, or research services.
  • Experience and education may be substituted for one another.
  • Due to the nature of this position, some work on weekends and evenings will be expected.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in legislative or government communications.
  • Proficiency in digital media tools and graphic design software (e.g., Adobe Creative Suite, Canva) for creating visual content aligned with legislative priorities.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate complex legislative information into clear, engaging content for diverse audiences.

Physical Requirements

  • Primarily performs sedentary office work; however, mobility (moving around the worksite) is routinely required to carry out some duties.
  • Requires extensive computer, telephone and client/customer contact and communication.
  • Requires the ability to move and position oneself as needed for filing and similar routine office duties.
  • Maintains attention to detail despite interruptions.
  • Ability to read printed materials and computer screens.
  • Must be able to move and transport records, documents, boxes, and all related information and materials, weighing up to 20 pounds when required.
