About the Role
An employee in this class is responsible for the administration, maintenance, and continuous improvement of the Town's Geographic Information System (GIS), including enterprise geospatial databases, data integrity, spatial analysis, cartographic production, and GIS application support.
Work is performed under the general supervision of the Planning Director and is evaluated based on technical proficiency, accuracy, quality of work, effectiveness in meeting departmental objectives, and feedback from Town officials, staff, and the public.
Responsibilities
- Manage and maintain geospatial datasets
- Develop maps, data visualizations, and analytical reports
- Conduct research and spatial analyses to support planning, infrastructure, and operational decision-making
- Ensure the accuracy, accessibility, and reliability of GIS information
- Provide technical GIS support and expertise to Town departments including Planning, Engineering, Public Works, Stormwater, Parks and Recreation, Code Enforcement, and Administration
- Assist the public with GIS-related requests
- Respond to inquiries from external agencies, consultants, and other organizations as appropriate
Required Education and Experience
- Graduation from a four-year college or university with major coursework in Geography, Geospatial Science, Planning, Computer Science, Engineering, or a closely related field
- At least 3 to 5 years of professional GIS experience, including data management, spatial analysis, and map production; or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- Possession of a valid North Carolina driver's license
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working in local government or supporting municipal operations, including planning, engineering, public works, utilities, parks and recreation, or other public sector environments
- Familiarity with SQLite data format
- GISP certification, Esri technical certifications, or other relevant GIS credentials preferred

- Hiring range is $67,643 - $84,141 annually; starting salary will be dependent on qualifications and prior experience
