GIS Application Developer Sr.
About the role
The Developer Sr, Application for Asset Technology/Geographic Information System (GIS) position within Gas Technology Delivery will work with limited supervision to design and develop custom applications to support the GIS Technology portfolio utilized by Southern Company Gas as well as the build and support of Southern Company Gas COTS applications. This role will be a subject matter expert with deep technical knowledge within the ESRI GIS Platform and associated mapping technology areas.
Responsibilities
- Develop custom software that leverages GIS technologies.
- Develop software solutions that leverage COTS with minimal customization.
- Create and drive completion of Technical Design Documents.
- Collaborate with junior team members to plan for coding work and overall program development.
- Translate technical specifications to creation of code that meets performance expectations/functionality requirements.
- Ability to modify existing software to correct errors, to adapt it to new hardware, or to upgrade interfaces, and improve performance based on specifications, with limited supervision.
- Troubleshoot, debug, maintain, and improve existing software and applications.
- Develop technology solutions and corresponding documentation to complex problems using deep technical expertise and creativity.
- Plan and participate in system and unit testing as required.
- Plan and participate in deployment activities to implement designed solutions.
- Maintain and follow production support processes focused on identification and mitigation of root causes.
- Flex to meet customer demands (production support and project work).
- Prioritize workload and deliver on project commitments.
- Provide on-call support: both solving issues independently as well as assisting other teams as needed.
- Support and mentor less experienced personnel.
- Use excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate complex technical concepts and plans in English.
- Ensure strategies and software solutions developed are aligned with the Technology Organization goals and strategies.
- Identify opportunities to leverage Automation, ML, or AI Models/AI Agents for development and application efficiencies.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in MIS, GIS, Computer Science, or a related field.
- 5 years minimum experience with GIS application software development or support.
- Experience with C#, Java, or other object-oriented programming language.
- Working experience of ESRI's .NET or Java SDK.
- Knowledge of ESRI’s REST API.
- Knowledge of ESRI’s JavaScript API.
- Experience with Python.
- Experience with Microsoft CoPilot for GitHub or Claude for Development purposes (welcome).
- Experience with TFS/GitHub for Version Control.
- Experience in the utility industry (preferred).
- Experience with Oracle (preferred).
- Experience with JavaScript, TypeScript, and Angular (preferred).
- Experience with Windows server administration and configuration (preferred).
- A deep, comprehensive knowledge of the Software Development Life Cycle and development principles.
- Experience working in an AGILE software development environment.
- Working knowledge of JIRA (preferred).
- A deep understanding of ESRI and other leading mapping tools, platforms, and applications.
- Ability to manage multiple assignments and conflicting priorities.
- Ability to work and communicate with business partners, and peers of varying levels of technical proficiency.
- Ability to provide on-call support both solving issues independently as well as assisting other, less experienced on-call personnel.
- Advanced understanding of various technical principles, theories, and concepts.
- Broad understanding of a wide range of technical areas.
- Ability to work well on a team and share coding responsibilities across multiple projects.
- Excellent communication skills in English including the ability to translate complex or technical ideas into non-technical language.
- Experience with ITIL processes and various programming languages.
Qualifications

$80,000 - $120,000 annually.
Schedule
Full-time, Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM.
