About the role

The Gift Shop Representative position at Houston Methodist is responsible for ordering, receiving, stocking, and inventorying specified merchandise as assigned. This role also assists customers with merchandise and operating registers when needed, answers the telephone, and assists customers with phone orders.

Responsibilities

  • Order, receive, stock, and maintain inventory of specified merchandise as assigned.
  • Assist customers with merchandise and operating registers when needed.
  • Answer the telephone and assist customers with phone orders.
  • Ensure the department's patient, visitor, and customer interactions align with Houston Methodist's ICARE values.
  • Perform light dusting and straightening of merchandise to ensure safety for guests.
  • Manage multiple ongoing priorities with minimal supervision.
  • Identify and escalate issues and opportunities for improvement.
  • Close out cash registers as needed.
  • Operate registers as needed.
  • Utilize resources with cost-effectiveness and value creation in mind.
  • Participate in organizing the work flow, problem-solving, and managing multiple ongoing priorities with minimal supervision.
  • Offer innovative solutions through participation in performance improvement projects and activities.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or equivalent education (examples include: GED, verification of homeschool equivalency, partial or full completion of post-secondary education, etc.)
  • Two years of retail experience, preferred
  • Demonstrates the skills and competencies necessary to safely perform the assigned job, determined through on-going skills, competency assessments, and performance evaluations
  • Sufficient proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing the English language necessary to perform the essential functions of this job, especially with regard to activities impacting patient or employee safety or security
  • Ability to effectively communicate with patients, physicians, family members and co-workers in a manner consistent with a customer service focus and application of positive language principles
  • Has a working knowledge of calculators, copiers, fax machine, computers
  • Ability to work with peers in a team situation
  • Strong organization skills and detail-oriented nature
  • Professional handling of exposure to confidential/sensitive information
