GI Technical Specialist

Duties

• Absorbs responsibility for setting up and passing instruments, labeling medications, holding scopes/biopsies/loops and other needed items.
• Assists the surgeon/physician, and assists with circulating duties as necessary.
• Applies and maintains principles of asepsis and infection control skillfully.
• Prepares the procedure room for the procedure, obtaining needed equipment and supplies.
• Maintains working knowledge of assembly and function of surgical instrumentation and equipment.
• Anticipates the needs of equipment and instruments by the surgeon during a procedure utilizing physician preference cards.
• Handles and cares for surgical specimens according to policy/procedure.
• Prepares the operating room for the next procedure by utilizing proper cleaning techniques and returning equipment to designated area.
• Completes required sponge, needle and instrument counts following policy/procedure.
• Assists with positioning, prepping, draping of the patient, and with transfer of the patient to and from the procedure room.
• Applies surgical dressings as needed.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Completion of surgical technologist education program preferred.
• BLS certification required.
• Minimum six months surgical technologist experience preferred.
• Clinical rotation in surgical technologist program acceptable as experience.
