Geotechnical Engineering Lead
About the role
This position can sit out of the following WSP offices: Boston, MANorth Providence, RIGlastonbury, CTWorcester, MAShelton, CTMerrimack, NHOther WSP offices throughout New England can be considered.
Job Duties
- Perform geotechnical engineering design and analyses for bridges, buildings, tunnels, underground structures, and retaining walls under minimal supervision of senior engineers
- Prepare/draft geotechnical memoranda, data reports and design reports
- Prepare comprehensive technical reports and presentations that explain research, concepts, and recommendations to prevent, control, restore, or address design, and/or construction issues or opportunities
- Collaborate with other disciplines and project partners
- Avoid involved from project inception to completion in the management of design and construction of infrastructure projects, including rehabilitation and reconstruction, grading, drainage, laying out installations, foundations, slopes, retaining structures, embankments, and other systems that are made or supported by soil or rock
- Develop and incorporate advanced technologies, monitoring devices, building materials, modeling techniques, design requirements, and operating strategies to account for the safety and functionality or end-users, transportation systems, structures, and the implementation of future-ready solutions with geotechnical engineering design standards
- Oversee and monitor cross-functional teams of engineers, planners, and scientific professionals to execute project work on mid-level and/or multiple concurrent projects, including budgets, tracking hours and expenses, task completion, cost and quantities of materials/equipment/labor, technical calculations, permit applications, construction, compliance documentation, and regulatory and technical analysis memos
- Cook up and review infrastructure design plans, ensuring data integrity and work is compliant with all applicable codes, ordinances, and regulations
- Prepare data and visualizations such as tables, charts, reports, sketches, calculations, cross-sections, and other illustrations for the interpretation or presentation of more complex data, findings, or analyses
- Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree Civil Engineering with a concentration in Geotechnical or Tunneling Engineering, or a closely-related field
- 7 to 10 years of relevant experience
- Engineer license required
- Extensive knowledge of geotechnical engineering and working knowledge of related disciplines (Structures, Civil, and/or Environmental)
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Proficiency with technical writing, office automation, discipline-specific design software (e.g., MicroStation, AutoCAD, Civil 3D, GeoSlope, Plaxis, Settle, LPILE, GROUP, GRLWEAP, SEEP/W, RockSciences Software, etc), technology, math principles, predictive models, spreadsheets, and other tools
- Must be flexible to a variety of schedules to meet business needs and able to prioritize responsibilities and quickly adapt to change in work environment
- Able to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek
- Ability and willingness to travel and perform field work
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s Degree in Geotechnical or Tunneling Engineering
- 40-Hour OSHA Health & Safety Training (HAZWOPER) (29 CFR 1910.120)
- Basic First Aid and Adult CPR training desired
- A member of and/or actively participate in local professional practice organizations
