Geotechnical Engineering Intern (Summer 2027)
About the role
Arup is a global consultancy with advisory and technical expertise across more than 150 disciplines. We guide, plan and design the future of the built environment. Globally, each year we recruit hundreds of graduates and students who help us see things differently and solve the most complex challenges facing our clients, climate and communities. Our geotechnical expertise supports the firm’s work on projects from building design to infrastructure for water, energy, mining, rail, highways, and aviation. We offer integrated services covering the full range of geotechnical needs. The opportunity includes preparing desk study reports, planning site investigations, inspecting geological materials, preparing laboratory test schedules, interpreting subsurface conditions, carrying out foundation and slope stability designs, supporting temporary support-of-excavation works, conducting ground movement predictions, and collaborating in multidisciplinary teams on subsurface elements.
Responsibilities
- Prepare desk study reports on sites due for development
- Plan and produce specifications for site investigation programs
- Inspect, log and describe properties of geological (soil and rock) materials to aid design and construction works
- Prepare laboratory test schedules
- Interpret subsurface conditions and understand their impact on design and construction
- Carry-out shallow and deep foundation design, slope stability calculations, and seismic assessments
- Support the completion of temporary support-of-excavation designs, including for basements, shafts, and cut-and-cover tunnels/subway stations
- Conduct preliminary ground movement predictions, hydrogeological impact and building damage assessments
- Collaborate in multidisciplinary teams (e.g. structural, civil, bridges & civil structures) to designs for subsurface elements
Requirements
Required:
- Pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Geotechnical Engineering, Geological Engineering/Engineering Geology or Civil Engineering with a focus in Geotechnical Engineering
- Sound knowledge of civil engineering fundamentals, soil and rock mechanics, and tunneling methods
- Good time-management habits, ability to multi-task, ability to sustain focus on long tasks
- Ability to communicate thoughts and ideas in an accessible way – distill design tasks and solutions into concise text and presentation slides
