About the role
GAI Consultants, Inc. is seeking a Geotechnical Engineer 3 to support Power Generation and Infrastructure projects. The position offers the flexibility to work remotely or in a hybrid setting from one of GAI's Pittsburgh area offices.
Responsibilities
- Perform geotechnical engineering assignments involving investigations and designs for a variety of facilities including foundations, buildings, bridges, retaining walls, and other structures.
- Design natural gas pipelines and compressor stations, and design residual waste landfills and impoundments.
- Develop subsurface investigations, monitor programs, and coordinate geologic site characterization.
- Install geotechnical field instrumentation and select samples for laboratory testing.
- Prepare proposals, budgets, schedules, calculations, specifications, and reports.
- Support construction activities by performing site inspections, preparing boring logs and geologic cross sections, and conducting field testing of soils.
- Interpret specifications and construction drawings, evaluate site conditions, and report on construction activities.
- Manage and assign tasks to other technical and non-technical staff.
- Plan and coordinate detailed aspects of engineering work, prepare scopes, budgets, and schedules for assignments.
- Represent the organization in communications pertaining to broad aspects of engineering assignments.
Requirements
- 8+ years of experience in geotechnical engineering.
- Professional Engineer (P.E.) license, reciprocity in multiple states.
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Civil Engineering.
- Ability to interpret complex technical and contractual language.
- Advanced oral and written communication skills.
- Experience with basic civil site design tasks.
Qualifications
- Ability to work in outdoor environments under varying weather conditions.
- Exposure to active construction sites.
- Capable of lifting and carrying tools, equipment, technical samples, documents, and other materials weighing up to 40–50 pounds.
- Frequent bending, crouching, and climbing may be required during fieldwork and sample collection.
- Comfortable working in remote or isolated locations, sometimes for extended durations.
- Comfortable working in confined spaces and/or at heights, as required by specific project sites.
- May require driving long distances to field sites and operating vehicles on unpaved or uneven roads.
Skills
- Knowledge of principles and practices in geotechnical engineering.
- Ability to independently evaluate, select, and adapt standard techniques, procedures, and criteria.
- Leadership and mentoring abilities.
- Proficiency in using software for geotechnical analysis and project management.
