About the role
As a GIS Analyst for the City of Fredericksburg, support citywide operations by maintaining geospatial data, producing high-quality GIS products, and ensuring our GIS systems remain accurate, accessible, and reliable for staff, public safety, and the community. This position is ideal for someone who enjoys solving problems, working with diverse datasets, collaborating across departments, and helping shape the City’s geospatial strategy.
Responsibilities
- GIS Operations and Data Management: Manage daily GIS operations by maintaining various geospatial datasets, developing spatial databases and GIS portals, coordinating imagery analysis, and performing GPS-based field inspections.
- Data Analysis and Support: Analyze geospatial data to aid city management, create maps and apps for diverse users, and provide training and support to GIS users.
- Technical Expertise and Troubleshooting: Troubleshoot GIS systems, scripting for workflows, and proficiency with ESRI applications and portals to ensure reliable system performance.
- Communication and Collaboration: Emphasize strong GIS principles, communication skills, decision-making, and collaboration, along with comfort in fieldwork and interpreting land records.
Requirements
- Associate’s degree in Cartography, Geography, Landscape Ecology, Natural Resources, Computer Science, or related field
- Two years of professional GIS experience involving data management, map production, and spatial analysis
- Equivalent education and experience considered
- Valid Commonwealth of Virginia Driver’s License
- Ability to pass a Police background check and obtain Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) Certification
Skills
- Strong grasp of GIS principles, cartography, database management, and geospatial data integrity
- Knowledge of scripting in GIS processes and workflows
- Experience working with the ESRI Suite of applications, including ArcGIS Pro, Experience Builder, and online ESRI applications
- Ability to analyze complex datasets and generate accurate, useful mapping products
- Knowledge of ArcGIS Online or ArcGIS Enterprise portals and content
- Skilled in technical troubleshooting and adapting to evolving technologies
- Strong communication skills, including the ability to train staff and create clear documentation
- Ability to prioritize responsibilities, make informed decisions, and collaborate effectively
- Comfort with occasional fieldwork, research of land records, and interpretation of plats/surveys

$54,776 - $71,210, dependent on qualifications
