The Role

The Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Programmer 2 position within the WIFIRE Lab at the San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC) plays a crucial role in developing and maintaining integrated systems for natural hazards monitoring, simulation, and response.

Responsibilities

• Resolve a variety of analysis and research issues using professional GIS concepts and applications.
• Work on assignments of moderate scope where analysis of data requires a review of a variety of factors and assist in additional analyses as needed to achieve research objectives.
• Analyze and display fire-related data sets using GIS software (e.g., ESRI and QGIS).
• Create geospatial simulations on fire spread using open source GIS tools.
• Convert data received from aircraft to ingest into GIS tools.
• Write and test computer programs to process data from atmospheric, vegetation, and fire related datasets (e.g., mesowest, NWS forecast, fuel moisture data).

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
• Working knowledge of GIS software, applications programming, database and table structure and design, user interface and experience design, and web application development.
• Experience with ArcGIS, QGIS, and/or spatial data science.
• Interpersonal skills to work with both technical and non-technical personnel.
• Ability to communicate technical information clearly and concisely.
• Attention to detail and ability to work quickly and efficiently.
• Ability to react and communicate rapidly and efficiently.
• Ability to work remotely and communicate effectively using collaborative applications.
• Demonstrated ability to think about environmental problems both spatially and temporally.
• Working knowledge in writing and testing computer programs to process data and related datasets.

Qualifications
