Genomics Bioinformatician

About the role

NIST seeks a Genomics Bioinformatician to analyze human/mammalian DNA sequencing data using bioinformatics tools to track genetic changes in cells post-genome editing. The role manages data and metadata following community standards, collaborates with researchers to elevate data quality, maintains digital records, and presents technical reports.

Responsibilities

• Analyze human and mammalian DNA sequencing data using advanced computational methods to determine genetic changes in normal and tumor cells before and after genome editing experiments.
• Organize and responsibly store data and metadata according to community best practices, while maintaining accurate electronic records to ensure high-quality, fully supported analysis.
• Consult with genome editing stakeholders to improve method quality, and present technical results through official reports, manuscripts, and oral presentations.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements for 0401 Biologist: Degree in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position. OR Combination of education and experience: Courses equivalent to a major as described above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

Basic Requirements for 1550 Computer Scientist: Bachelor's degree in computer science or bachelor's degree with 30 semester hours in a combination of mathematics, statistics, and computer science. At least 15 of the 30 semester hours must have included any combination of statistics and mathematics that included differential and integral calculus. All academic degrees and course work must be from accredited or pre-accredited institutions.

In addition to the basic requirement for both 0401 and 1550: Applicants must also have 1 year (52 weeks) of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-9 (ZP-II at NIST) level. Specialized Experience is defined as experience in bioinformatics or computational biology research related to genomics or data science. OR Master's or equivalent graduate degree. OR A combination of graduate education and specialized experience as defined in the additional requirements.
