About the role

Serves as the primary contact for families, department physicians, and outside physicians seeking care for their patients. Provides genetic counseling and case management for patients/families to facilitate understanding of disease or birth defect, explain diagnosis and implications, including recurrence risks, prognosis, and reproductive options. Ensures completion of genetic counseling services for other clinics and provides education for physicians, residents, and nurses. Reviews genetic test interpretations and reports results. May write policies, procedures, abstracts, or posters.

Responsibilities

• General:
  • Supports customer service efforts of the organization using genetics expertise.
  • Reviews complex genetic test orders to ensure correct and cost-effective testing.
  • May participate in training Genetic Counselors, fellows, and residents.
• Clinical Focus:
  • Obtains medical/family history, conducts psychosocial assessment, provides genetic counseling, and coordinates testing.
  • Reports and interprets test results with families and referring physicians; handles care coordination, prescription refills, and communication with schools, therapists, and physicians.
  • Obtains and reviews medical records, consults with families and providers, and conducts literature reviews prior to appointments.
• Laboratory Focused:
  • Interprets complex genomic data, including clinical correlation of gene/variant with patient phenotype and scientific literature review.
  • Supports new test development and updates to existing tests.
  • Prepares technical documentation drafts for protocols and policies.

Requirements

• At least 1 year of related experience, with preference for pediatric and/or metabolic roles.
• Graduate or professional degree in a relevant field, or equivalent experience.
• American Board of Genetic Counselors certification required within 2 years of hire.
