Genetics Laboratory Technician

About the role

This is a full-time (40 hr/wk) day shift position with hours Monday-Friday, 8:00 am - 5:00 pm (but could be flexible).

Responsibilities

• Perform nucleic acid extractions from a variety of sample types
• Molecular testing via PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) and Fragment analysis
• Use of an analyzer and other molecular diagnostic methods to generate STR (short tandem repeats) profiles of samples
• Data analysis and release of test results
• May be cross-trained and perform specimen processing responsibilities

Requirements

• A 4-year degree in a science-related field preferred, or current coursework
• Typically, 1-2 years’ experience preferred
• Nucleic acids extractions from several specimen types
• Micro-pipetting skills
• Ability to set up high-throughput molecular reactions, specifically PCR (Polymerase Chain reaction) reactions
• General science background, including genetics, is helpful
• Good attention to detail and are organized with the ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team
• Ability to follow Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) as appropriate
• Communication skills, both verbal and written
• Fluency in the English language
• Personal computer skills, including strong typing ability and proficient use of Microsoft Office
• Physical requirements that go with working in a lab – standing and sitting for extended periods of time, phone & computer use, extended reach, lifting up to 50lb, and specific vision ability – close, color, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus

• Potential exposure to agents known to cause disease in humans and use of potentially hazardous chemicals as defined by the National Hazard Communication Standards
