About the role

We are seeking a full time, energetic, efficient, and detail-oriented individual to fill a reproductive genetic counseling position serving a high-volume and diverse patient population.

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct counseling services and education to patients who are pregnant/planning to become pregnant regarding the following issues: teratogen exposures, abnormal ultrasound findings, abnormal blood test results, positive carrier status, advanced maternal/paternal age, personal, pregnancy, and/or family history of a complex trait, single gene disorder, or chromosome abnormality, multi-fetal pregnancy, termination of pregnancy, non-invasive and invasive prenatal testing options, pre-implantation genetic diagnosis, sperm and ovum donation, etc.
  • Provide counseling, continuity of care and appropriate follow-up genetic counseling services as needed via hybrid model including both in-person office visits, and some telehealth visits.
  • Supervise Master’s level genetic counseling students, as well as fellows, residents, medical students during their clinical reproductive counseling rotations.
  • Write chart notes, patient summary letters, and/or physician consultation letters.
  • Afford administrative assistants with the proper and timely scheduling of patients. i.e. determine whether an appropriate referral has been made and ensure that patients are seen as quickly as possible by an appropriate genetic counselor/physician as indicated.
  • Report and interpret carrier and prenatal screening/testing results for physicians and their patients.
  • Field numerous daily telephone calls from physicians who are seeking guidance about the appropriate management of their patients. Issues that are commonly addressed: interpretation of test results, obstetric and/or genetic issues of concern identified within pregnancy, medical and/or family histories, the availability of carrier screening, NIPT and/or diagnostic testing options, whether genetic counseling/testing is medically indicated, and basic information about rare and common genetic/chromosome disorders.
  • Cook up specimen retrieval, shipping, tracking, and/or billing issues for specialized diagnostic testing at outside laboratories (such as testing for single gene disorders such as Noonan syndrome, skeletal dysplasia, WES, WGS).
  • Facilitate communication between diagnostic laboratories (cytogenetic, molecular, and biochemical) and referring doctors. Duties include providing patients and physicians with normal, inconclusive, and/or abnormal test results, recommending, and arranging for appropriate follow-up testing and/or counseling, clarifying specimen requirements, and relaying billing information.
  • Provide targeted genetics education to medical/graduate students, residents, and other learners.

Qualifications

  • 2 years of genetic counseling experience; 5 or more years of experience is preferred.
  • American Board of Genetic Counseling Certification within 3 years of graduation from Genetic Counseling Program.
  • Bi-lingual Spanish preferred.
