About the role
The Hospital Assistant III works under the supervision of the Practice Manager, supporting the delivery of care to patients in the Ambulatory Services department. They assist with various patient care procedures and front/back office responsibilities, including scheduling, pre-registration, insurance verification, and coordination of medical and financial information.
Responsibilities
- Scheduling of clinic visits as needed.
- Telephone and in-person contact regarding genetic counseling, genetic testing, and support group participation.
- Assisting low-income patients with determining eligibility for counseling and genetic testing at reduced or no cost.
- Interviewing patients and documenting their personal and family medical history.
- Entering data into the Cancer Risk Program (CRP) database and preparing charts.
- Preparing pedigrees using Progeny pedigree drawing software and patient history forms.
- Writing letters of medical necessity and preparing family genetic counseling reports.
- Communicating with referring physicians' offices and serving as a liaison for outside providers.
- Managing insurance authorizations and pharmacy refills, as well as handling complicated treatment authorizations and hospital admission arrangements.
- Performing other duties as assigned, such as outreach event participation, preparing fliers, filing, transporting samples, following up with referring health professionals, and typing.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in a biological/health science or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Knowledge of genetics and genetic concepts.
- Strong computer skills and experience with Microsoft Office software.
- Experience with patient and family contact in a community or medical setting.
- Previous experience with clinical projects, either in an administrative or clinical role, is preferred.
- Demonstrated knowledge of medical practice and genetic terminology and concepts.
- Experience with Outlook, FileMaker Pro, and Progeny (or other pedigree drawing software) is preferred.
- Bi-lingual or multi-lingual capability (Spanish, Cantonese, Russian) is strongly preferred.
