About the role

The Genetic Counseling Assistant will assist with the management of clinical genetic testing workflow. Duties include triaging inquiries, obtaining insurance pre-authorizations for specialized laboratory testing, coordinating and scheduling follow-up appointments, preparing for visits by collecting and reviewing relevant medical records and lab reports, ensuring participant family histories are reviewed, preparing patient test requisitions, maintaining communication with labs, coordinating test-ordering and sending out testing samples to laboratories, tracking and organizing test results, and assisting with notifying patients/providers of negative test results as needed. The role also involves coordinating the send-out of completed clinic summaries and result reports to families/providers, acting as a liaison to facilitate communication with and execute various requests from internal and external providers, and performing other duties as assigned.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare for visits by collecting and reviewing relevant medical records and lab reports, as well as participant family histories, and ensuring these records are provided to the team in advance
  • Prepare patient test requisitions for genetic testing
  • Maintain communication with labs
  • Coordinate test-ordering and send-out of testing samples to laboratories
  • Track and organize test results
  • Afford patients/providers with negative test results as needed
  • Cook up coordination of send-out of completed clinic summaries and result reports to families/providers
  • Act as a liaison to facilitate communication with and execute various requests from internal and external providers
  • Perform other duties as assigned (e.g. maintain clinical database)

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in a biological/health science or equivalent in experience required
  • Knowledge of medical terminology and prior laboratory experience strongly preferred
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills
  • Strong attention to detail and computer accuracy
  • Strong and effective communication skills
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel and Word)
  • Bilingual (fluent in Spanish) strongly preferred
