Position Summary

The Genetic Counseling Assistant supports the BUMC genetics team with referral triage, operational workflow, documentation preservation, patient care coordination, variant database management, administrative meeting support, and assistance in genetic testing coordination.

Essential Responsibilities / Duties

  • Triage incoming cases to appropriate divisions
  • Optimize operational workflows such as prior authorization, informed consent documentation, and pedigree collection
  • Aid in coordination of care for complex patients and re-engagement of patients lost to care
  • Oversee a database of variants of uncertain significance for genetic testing across the institution, triaging reports to appropriate divisions and verifying critical notifications
  • Attend Medical Genetics Oversight and Genetic Testing Workgroup meetings to provide administrative support
  • Assist in the creation of educational and promotional materials for medical staff and patients
  • Participate in performance/quality improvement projects
  • Track the status of genetic testing
  • Other duties as assigned

Education & Experience

  • Minimum of 1 year commitment
  • Bachelor’s degree in a biological/health science or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Experience in a clinical environment is preferred

Knowledge & Skills

  • Comfortable working with a diverse population and interacting with medical personnel
  • Must be able to communicate effectively (both oral and written) with clinicians and patients
  • Must be able to work collaboratively as part of a team in a fast-paced environment
  • Excellent organizational skills, ability to multi-task and attention to detail
  • Requires the ability to take initiative, problem-solve, be resourceful and troubleshoot
  • Ability to be flexible in response to changing demands
  • Proficient in MS Word and PowerPoint; Skilled in MS Excel
  • Proficiency in Spanish, Haitian Creole, or Portuguese is appreciated

Compensation Range

This range offers an estimate based on the minimum job qualifications. However, our approach to determining base pay is comprehensive, and a broad range of factors is considered when making an offer.
