About the Role

Alaska Marine Lines is seeking a Generator Mechanic to maintain and repair marine power packs and generator systems for marine transportation. This role involves preventative maintenance, electrical and mechanical diagnostics, and other duties. This is a safety-sensitive position with the opportunity to travel to Alaska twice a year for varied lengths of time.

Responsibilities

  • Operate, perform preventative maintenance, repair, and overhaul of a fleet of containerized diesel generator sets used in refrigerated cargo service.
  • Inspect and maintain diesel engines and ancillary components, including pressure washing, steam cleaning, lube oil changes, oil and fuel filter services, and tune-ups.
  • Troubleshoot and perform repairs to diesel engines, including rebuilding, repairing, or replacing major components.
  • Inspect, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair three-phase AC generators rated up to 500 kW and 480 VAC output.
  • Inspect, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair analog and digital generator set control systems, including reprogramming set points and replacing ECM’s and other electronic components.
  • Inspect, maintain, and repair AC electrical panels, circuit breakers, transformers, and other electrical components and wiring used in generator set containers.
  • Perform load bank testing on generator sets to ensure operation and reliability.
  • Safely transfer diesel fuel between fuel tanks.
  • Check and inspect generator sets while running live refrigerated container loads both shore side and on board barges.
  • Train other personnel in the proper and safe operation of power generation equipment.
  • Own basic hand tools common to the trade and acquire additional tooling as required.
  • Work with Shop Lead and Department Manager to maintain adequate inventory of parts, materials, and tooling.
  • Assist refrigeration technicians as required.
  • Use and maintain company-supplied tooling.
  • Work with the Purchasing Department to request items in the absence of the Shop Lead and/or Department Manager.

Requirements

  • 2-year vocational/technical degree in Diesel Technology or related field and a minimum of 5 years’ experience with mechanical and electronic diesel engine service and repair in industrial and/or marine environments.
  • Previous experience with 15–500 kW power generation; Caterpillar, Cummins/Onan, and/or John Deere.
  • Good AC and DC electrical aptitude and the ability to read and understand electrical schematics and diagrams.
  • Previous experience with rigging, blocking, and lofting of equipment for the removal/installation of major components.
  • Ability to meet a regular work schedule and work overtime as required.
  • Ability to plan, organize, and prioritize work to meet schedules and deadlines.
  • Regular attendance and timeliness; daily physical presence is required.
  • Ability to work alone or as part of a team with minimal supervision.
  • Flexibility and adaptability to constant changes and ability to work in a high-stress environment.
  • PC skills: Windows, Excel, Outlook, and keyboarding proficiency.
  • Use of a personal mobile device for essential work tasks such as multi-factor authentication (MFA), accessing Dayforce, and receiving time-sensitive communications.
